Scheduling  Put your name and ID number on the BLUE sheet now!  This is the sheet you will turn in to your social studies or support teacher by Feb. 3 with your signatures at the bottom of the page!

Every 9 th grader takes: 1. English-pick 1 2. Math-pick 1 3. Science-pick 1 4. World Studies-pick 1 --Place a check by the course number you want to take on the sheet after speaking with your teachers.

Teacher Recommendation:  Students’ current teachers in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish will make a recommendation on what class a student should take in 9 th grade.  Students will be placed in that class automatically.

Teacher Recommendation:  If the student/parent wants to take a lower level course, they should mark the lower level class on the scheduling sheet. When high school counselors meet with students in February, it will be discussed and the change to the lower class will be made.  If the student/parent wants to take a higher level (Honors) course then what the teacher recommended, they should mark the higher level class on the scheduling sheet. When high school counselors meet with students in February, it will be discussed and the student will be given a Parent Override Form. Once that form is completed and turned in to the high school guidance office, the student will be moved to the upper level course.

Physical Education/Freshmen Foundations  Everyone will take Freshmen Foundations (semester course)  PE-You must take PE if you are not playing a sport/band/cheerleading  Only regular PE meets the PE requirement (Not Team Sports or Weightlifting)  If you are using the “PE Exemption” by playing 2 seasons of a sport/band/cheer, place an X in the “P.E. Exemption” box on your schedule sheet. You do not have to take PE IF you participate in 2 seasons of a sport/band/cheer during high school.

Elective Classes  Classes listed in grey are semester courses. You need to pick 2 of these to fill 1 class period for the entire year.  Classes not shaded (white) last the entire year for one period.

Elective Classes  Classes are described in the Course Description Guide-LOOK AT IT before picking classes  Guide is located ONLINE on the WMHS website on the Guidance page under the Scheduling link.

Elective Classes  You must select 7 periods worth of classes/study hall. Count carefully!  English, math, science, world studies = 4 periods  Freshmen Foundations + PE or 1 other semester elective= 5 periods.

Notes on Electives: Art  To take an art class you must take Art Fundamentals or Digital Art Fundamentals at the high school BEFORE taking any other high school art class. Taking it at the middle school for high school credit is NOT the same class. 2 Paths: Art Fundamentals Digital Art Fundamentals Ceramics Digital Photography Drawing 1 Graphic Design Sculpture

Notes on Electives: Band  ALL students in Marching Band MUST take Symphonic Band. Color Guard does NOT have to take Symphonic Band.  BUT you can also take Symphonic Band without being in Marching Band.

Foreign Language  NOT required for graduation.  Colleges prefer at least 2 years. If you plan on only 2 years, waiting until your junior/senior years could be better.

Notes on Electives: Choir  9 th grade girls who want to take choir: Pick Freshmen Women’s Choir 9 th grade boys who want to take choir: Pick Concert Choir

New Classes: Year-long classes  Pre-Engineering Technologies: Grades Teams design and test their ideas using modeling, automation, robotics, and mechanical & computer control systems, while exploring energy and the environment.  Engineering Principles: grade 9-Must have taken-STEM 2 in 8 th grade. Students will learn to apply problem solving, research and design skills to create solutions to engineering challenges.

Study Hall  You may only have 1 study hall per semester. You don’t have to have one.  No credit for study hall.  Check “Semester Study Hall” or “Year Long Study Hall.”  This means you don’t select a class to fill that period of the day.

Students on IEP’s  1 period of support in place of a study hall  Pick 6 other periods of classes  Talk to your support teacher! Turn in your schedule sheet to your support teacher.

Eligibility  1.5 GPA  Passing 5 classes worth.5 credit or 1 credit. (Don’t include PE, weightlifting, or support, or courses you are re-taking)

Example Course Selection List: Use the salmon colored sheet to help you plan your classes: Class Semester 1 Semester 2 1EnglishEnglish 2MathMath 3ScienceScience 4 World Studies 5 Freshmen Foundations PE (or other elective if playing sports) 6 Spanish 1 7 Study Hall

Example Course Selection List: Class Semester 1 Semester 2 1EnglishEnglish 2MathMath 3ScienceScience 4 World Studies 5 (Using PE exemption) Health Art Fundamentals 6 Spanish 1 7 (2 semester classes=1 whole period filled all year Journalism Team Sports

Alternative Elective Choices:  Pick at least 3 “back-up” classes in case we can’t fill your first choice options that you circled on the sheet. Write them in #1-3 after you have picked your “first-choice” classes.  These are choices you DID NOT already check on the blue sheet.

Schedule Changes  At the beginning of the school year, schedule changes are only made for specific reasons.  CHOOSE your courses carefully! Read the descriptions in the online guide.

Schedule Changes  1) ___A senior needs to make a change to meet graduation requirements.  2) ___A teacher and student request a more appropriate level of a subject for the student.  3) ___A technical error was made in the schedule.  4) ___The course has been completed in summer school.  5) ___Prolonged illness where an excessive absence makes a normal load too heavy.  6) ___To balance classes. (Example: Two study halls 1st semester and none 2nd)  7) ___An IEP plan necessitates the change.  8) ___Drop a study hall to add a class if space is available.  9) ___ Student wants removed from class with a grade of WF (Withdraw Fail)

College Credit Plus  Students can earn free college credit while still in high school that also counts for high school credit.  To learn more: February 9, 2016 at 6:00 in WMHS Auditorium
