1 Medlin Middle School 8 th Grade Registration 2014

2 What is different from 7 th grade?  Your course selections will have a huge bearing on the track you will take for high school  You do not have to have P.E. or athletics  You will have 4 electives  You can start earning high school credit

3 What is important to consider?  You need to take a challenging curriculum to help you become college ready  If you take some high school credit classes as an 8 th grader, then you will have more spots in high school for things like an academy, sports, and other electives  Algebra I, Spanish I, and Communication Applications grades are factored in your high school GPA

4 What do I consider when choosing my classes?  All pre-AP courses require a parent signature. Pre AP courses help prepare you for ACT/SAT tests, as well as AP and dual credit classes  Language Arts: -Signatures are required for GT and Pre-AP -Summer reading is required for Pre AP & GT Language Arts  Math: -8 th grade Algebra I math pathway is continued from 7 th grade Pre AP math. If you did not take Pre AP 7 th grade math, an assessment will be given in May to help you decide if that is the right choice for you.

5 Athletics  A physical is required in order to participate each year  You can try out for competitive sports.  Boys: football, basketball, cross country, track, tennis and soccer.  Girls: volleyball, basketball, cross country, track, tennis and soccer.  Girls not playing volleyball or basketball will not be in athletics.  Boys not playing football or basketball will not be in athletics  Tryouts for tennis are the 1 st week of school. If you are currently in tennis as a 7 th grader, sign up for tennis. Otherwise, sign up for pe and a schedule change will happen if you make the team.

6 High school elective information  Communication Applications (Speech) is required for all students to graduate high school  If you register for Communication Applications, then you have to register for Health because each class is only 1 semester long  Most students are required to have 2 foreign language credits to graduate so you can enroll in Spanish I at Medlin then you will only have to take one more year in high school. You need to take foreign language in 2 consecutive years.

7 Electives Continued  You can choose 4 electives as an 8 th grader – on your registration form you need to # your choices, i.e. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 & 8 in the order of your preference – 1 being your top choice  SSI classes will be given to you as an elective if you did not pass the 7 th grade math and/or reading STAAR.  You will need approval for: athletics, One Act Play, choir, band, and orchestra.

8 Applications Are Required If you are interested in:  Webnews  Journalism/Yearbook  Student Aide you will need to fill out an application. The applications are due to the counseling office by March 7 th.

9 Finally…  Do not wait to get required signatures such as athletics, band, choir, or orchestra!  All completed registration forms (including all signatures) and applications need to be turned in by March 7th.
