1 Welcome to WMHS! Mr. Tanchevski-Principal Mrs. Ladowitz-Assistant Principal Mr. Wiard-Counselor Last Names A-G Mrs. Grezlik-Counselor Last Names H-O Mrs. Miller-Counselor Last Names P-Z Scheduling information, Course Description Guide, and other information located online:

2 Graduation Requirements: Credits
-- Received credit in 8th grade at WMS Amy Notes: Fine arts does not have to be for high school credit. Art/music classes taken in 7th and 8th grade count as “exposure.” Colleges like to see 1 credit on the transcript though. Health-8th grade at WMS counts PE- Unless playing 2 seasons sports/marching band/cheerleading

3 Graduation Requirements: Testing
Herb

4 Graduation Requirements: Testing

5 Every 9th grader takes: 1. English Language Arts 1-pick 1
2. Math-pick 1 3. Science-pick 1 World Studies-pick 1 Ask your student for the BLUE schedule form!

6 Teacher Recommendation:
Students’ current teachers in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish will make a recommendation on what class a student should take in 9th grade. Students will be placed in that class automatically.

7 Teacher Recommendation:
If the student/parent wants to take a lower level course, they should mark the lower level class on the scheduling sheet. When high school counselors meet with students in March, it will be discussed and the change to the lower class will be made. If the student/parent wants to take a higher level (Honors) course then what the teacher recommended, they should mark the higher level class on the scheduling sheet. When high school counselors meet with students in February, it will be discussed and the student will be given a Parent Override Form. Once that form is completed and turned in to the high school guidance office, the student will be moved to the upper level course.

8 Physical Education/Freshmen Foundations
Everyone will take Freshmen Foundations (semester course) PE-must take either Lifetime Fitness or Female Fitness if not playing a sport/band/cheerleading Only Lifetime Fitness or Female Fitness meets the PE requirement (Not Team Sports or Weightlifting) If student are using the “PE Exemption” by playing 2 seasons of a sport/band/cheer, place an X in the “P.E. Exemption” box on the schedule sheet. Students do not have to take PE IF they participate in 2 seasons of a sport/band/cheer during high school.

9 Elective Classes Classes listed in grey are semester courses. Pick 2 of these to fill 1 class period for the entire year. Classes not shaded last the entire year for one period.

10 Elective Classes Classes are described in the Course Description Guide-LOOK AT IT before picking classes Guide is located ONLINE on the WMHS website on the Guidance page under the Scheduling link.

11 Elective Classes Must select 7 periods worth of classes/study hall. Count carefully! English, math, science, world studies = 4 periods Freshmen Foundations + PE or 1 other semester elective= 5 periods

12 Notes on Electives: Band
ALL students in Marching Band MUST take Symphonic Band. Color Guard does NOT have to take Symphonic Band. BUT students may take Symphonic Band without being in Marching Band.

13 Foreign Language NOT required for graduation.
Colleges prefer at least 2 years. If a student plans on taking only 2 years, waiting until the junior/senior years could be better.

14 Study Hall Students may only have 1 study hall per semester. Students don’t have to have one. No credit for study hall. Check “Semester Study Hall” or “Year Long Study Hall.” This means students don’t select a class to fill that period of the day.

15 Students on IEP’s 1 period of “Transition Support” in place of a study hall Pick 6 other periods of classes Talk to current support teacher for help picking classes!

16 Reading/Math Labs A select number of students will receive letters in the next week informing a student of their placement into a reading/math lab course.
