ENGAGE – WHY DO WE MEASURE AND HOW DO WE MEASURE? Objectives: -Collect data and make measurements with accuracy and precision. -Organize, analyze, make inferences and summarize conclusions based on data. Read the objectives to yourself. Turn to your shoulder partner and take turns re-stating the objectives.

ELUSIVE QUEST FOR ONE TRUE KILOGRAM FINALLY PAYS OFF Read the article to yourself or with a partner, your choice. You don’t have to read word for word – just enough to get the ideas. Pair up, call yourselves “A” or “B”, and take turns summarizing the article. The deck shall select a lucky contestant to tell me what you both came up with.

ENGAGE – MEASUREMENT POST-ITS Get up, read the poster, and write an answer to the question on your post-it. When enough post-its are up and I give the signal, pick up a post-it (not yours) from the poster.

WHAT WERE YOUR ANSWERS? Want to tell us what someone wrote?

EXPLORE: MEASUREMENT ACTIVITY Objective: Use a shoe, a meter stick, and a calculator to review how to measure and convert between “units”. -Please do the activity on pg. 2. You will be timed. -Answer the questions in the Procedure: #1 – 5. -You can form your own lab groups of Meter sticks and calculators are in the back. -Always clean up after every activity. -Work on the “Questions” after the activity. We’ll go over the answers to the “questions to discuss as a class” later.

EXPLORE: MEASUREMENT ACTIVITY Questions to discuss as a class: (Think/Pair/Share) 1.How did you convert between shoe lengths and other units? 2. What is the actual length of the room? Did all groups come up with the same length? Why or why not? 3. Which group’s estimate is the most accurate? Why? 4. Could an object other than a shoe be used to do this? (How?) 5.If the standard distance around a running track is 440 yards, how many shoe lengths is this? How many miles is one lap? How many laps would you need to do to run a mile? How about 1 km? Note: 1 yard = meters 1 yard = 3 feet 1 mile = 5280 feet

EXIT TICKET Answer each question in 3-5 complete sentences each. 1.Describe what you learned today about our class. 2.Describe what you learned today about how measurement works. End of Class Procedure: Turn in exit ticket. Wait for dismissal. Please, no phones! Clean up. When you are dismissed by me (not the bell), push in your chairs straight as you leave. Homework: Get contract signed. Buy supplies. Bring one label from home that clearly shows a safety warning to class. Tissues or wipes (optional). A picture is fine. Study for your Daily Quiz 1.2.
