2 Who is Mrs. Rostas? Born and raised in Arizona
Graduated from Coronado High School in Scottsdale Graduated from Arizona State University and currently working on a Master's degree Sister in 8th grade Played softball, basketball and volleyball, coached competitive volleyball Married with two children, Jack is 2½, Emily is 1 3 dogs: Ralph, Guinness, Jaz Want a duck

4 Who are you? Take a few minutes to fill out the note card in front of you with the following information: Name What do you preferred to be called? How do you learn best? (From listening to the teacher, reading by yourself, doing something, seeing something?) What are you most excited about for this year? What is your favorite subject in school? What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you want to go to college? Why or why not? Who do you live with at home (names and relation)? Do you have brothers or sisters (names and ages)? Tell me one thing that makes you special

5 Cornell Notes You will need to practice Cornell notes to get used to them so please take notes on the rest of the slide show You will be quizzed on this information!

6 Classroom Expectations Just Remember the 5 B's
Be on time Be prepared Be respectful Be responsible Be cooperative

7 Paper Heading Please put a proper heading on every paper you turn in
Your heading should include your name, date, period, and assignment title in the upper right corner of your paper Name Date Period Assignment

8 Classroom Procedures Line up outside the door quietly, wait for me to invite you in Take your notebook to your desk and silently begin the brainwork activity, when finished, remain quiet for further instructions Homework is always due at the beginning of class, NEVER do homework during class Homework is turned into the box with your period number on it Current events are due by Friday each week (even if you don't have my class on Friday)

9 Classroom Procedures Cont'd
Late assignments are marked off 10% per day, no credit after one week Participation in class activities is mandatory You may not leave the room without permission and a pass You may get tissue or sharpen your pencil without asking (please wait until I'm not talking) You will be counted absent if you are not in your assigned seat Your desk matches your book number, you are responsible for any damage to the book

10 Classroom Procedures Cont'd
Please keep all four legs of your desk and chair on the ground at all times, failure to follow this procedure will result in the loss of chair privileges for the day Please raise your hand and wait to be called on to speak and do not interrupt anyone else We will discuss very sensitive topics this year, remember that everyone has a right to their opinion and we will respect everyone's opinions, beliefs, culture, race, and rights

11 When is your birthday? Mrs. Rostas 3/3
Take a minute to write your first and last name and birthday on the sticky note When you have finished, stick it in the month of your birthday on our birthday calendar Abbreviate the month by number

12 Homework Syllabus Parent letter
Please read the class syllabus with your parents/guardians The parent letter must be filled out by your parents/guardians Please return the bottom portion of the parent letter signed by your parents/guardians by Monday, August 9, 2010

13 Self-portrait Draw a picture that represents you, it may be anything (an object, a scene, or a face, etc.) Colored pencils, markers, crayons are located in the colorful drawers, please share with your group and clean up any materials you bring to the table I will collect your self-portraits at the end of the period

14 Homework: Personality Bag
You need to decorate the outside of this brown bag with your name, make it look awesome, these will be on our wall Inside the bag, you must bring 5-10 items that describe you or are important to you You will present your personality bag and the items inside to your classmates Your personality bags are due Monday/Tuesday, we will present then

15 Classroom Scavenger Hunt
You may work with one partner to find the answers to the scavenger hunt questions All answers must be written in complete sentences All of the answers are in the classroom somewhere.... Good luck!
