Primary Research Report By Jude Abbey

Conducting primary research Using a questionnaire i originally created, i have been able to collate information from an audience in order to find what elements i need to feature in my magazine through the knowledge of my target audience.

Methods and Techniques As my magazine is targeted for ages 20 and above, i couldn’t conduct the research with my classmates. My questionnaire was taken in various parts of town where my target audience would have been located: library, Music shops and in the town centre. I rewarded each participant with a free pencil. As they were circling the right answers and putting their opinions in spaces provided.

The Information I Gathered

With the age range provided, the audience used for this questionnaire had a majority between 22 and 34 years old. More than a quarter were over the age of 50 years old and no one aged 20 and under filled out the questionnaire. I began the questionnaire using age as My first question. The results will indicate which age range will suit my target audience best. AGE Younger audience might find this magazine unappealing due to its low popularity in modern music genres.

Gender My questionnaire has revealed that the gender of the audience was balanced. This allows me to provide fair information as both genders evenly give their opinion 50 percent male and 50 percent female

Occupation I chose to ask the audience about occupational status to gain an idea of the amount of disposable income and class of the target audience of my magazine The occupational status shows an equal level of students with the “Other” response. The “other” response had a majority of retirement on the questionnaire as it was stated by the audience. The research shows that majority of my target audience will be in a full time occupation

Interest and Hobbies Having the audience choose their interest and hobbies allows me to know what the main content of the magazine will hold. Two main interests stood out from the rest. allowing me to have a clear focus on content. Majority of my target audience will have an interest in Performing and Creative Arts. This will allow me to create many ideas for the content in my magazine

Features in double page spread I asked my audience what they would like to be included into the double page spread. Knowing personally what people enjoy reading in their magazine allows me to understand the right amount of context in the magazine. Majority of the audience preferred reviews to factual information however all of the options had interest and therefore i will take it into account when creating my double page spread.

Colour Scheme I asked my audience which colour scheme they preferred amongst the choices given. Knowing what colour to use on my front page is highly important as i must know which colours will attract the right audience as different colours represent different emotions and reactions. Majority of my audience had an interest in blue and black. The next popular choice was orange and black. I will be experimenting with colour scheme during drafts of my magazine to see which works best and is still beneficial for my audience.

Places of purchase Knowing the place of purchase allows me to know where i will get the best publicity for my magazine. Magazines must be sold where the audience can easily access. The most popular place of purchase was in book stores and the least was online. This could be due to complications of terms and conditions of online subscriptions from the older generation

Frequency of Purchase I asked my audience how often they buy their magazine. This will help me know how much content is required in the magazine before it is published. I found out that none of my audience purchase a seasonal magazine and therefore i will not be creating a seasonal magazine. Over half of my audience preferred a weekly magazine as they might feel it keeps them up to date more frequently than a monthly subscription or purchase.

Available prizes The target audience must be attracted to the magazine and giving out prizes through competitions is a good way of drawing attention to the magazine. Majority of my audience preferred tickets and discounts as prizes to win in the magazine. I will take this into consideration and also take into account the age range of my target audience, allowing me to also include the second favourite prize which was musical instruments.

Conclusion With the information i have gathered, i have come to some decisions whilst taking many different aspects into consideration.

My Decisions (Conclusion) My Target audience will be from the age 22+ as they were the majority for my research. The within the target audience the gender content will be equal in my magazine. The context of my magazine will be of the performing and creative arts. Which should allow many opportunities for entertainment in my magazine. The main feature in my double page spread will be reviews on new music and artists. but i will also include statistical information in my magazine. I will include tickets, discounts and Instrument give aways through competition in my magazine. To keep my audience interested and satisfied with my magazine. I will make my magazine a weekly purchase to keep my audience updated all the time as majority prefer it that way. I will also distribute my magazine to well known music shops and book stores. This will also my magazine to reach its readership circulation target.

My Decisions (Conclusion) I have decided to leave the colour scheme of the magazine till i have condone more research. This will help me clarify which colours i would like to use for my magazine and contents page.
