Foster The People - Helena Beat: Music Video
Primary Research Foster The People - Helena Beat: Music Video Ryan & Ryan

Introduction After writing out our questionnaire we handed them out to our target audience for our music video and some outsiders. The purpose of the questionnaire/survey was to find out more information about our target audience. We are creating a music video for the song ‘Helena Beat’ by Foster The People - of the Indietronica genre. Our target audience is teenagers/young adults. We went to Harlow town centre to gather information as this is a typical location were our audience is.

Personal Information This is the personal information we gained from the questionnaire. This shows that we asked the majority of people in our target audience (16-20 year olds). We did this so that we can get the correct information. We also asked some people that weren’t in our target audience age range. We did this so we can have so data to compare it to. The majority of the people we asked lived in Harlow. This is because we were looking for our target audience in Harlow. 85% of the people we asked were either a student or a student with a part time job. This is because we asked people in the town centre, which is right next door to the college.

We asked this question to find out how to release the music video once we have made it. f we release it via the most popular source it will gain the most popularity. We found out that youtube was the most popular media source that people watched music videos on. Therefore by releasing out video onto youtube it will get more publicity. By doing this we found out that the least popular source was to release the video via DVD or CD as this was the least popular. If we further wanted to give our video more publicity we could broadcast it on TV. This way it could reach more of our target audience. The reason we asked people what their favourite indie band was to find out sources for our secondary research. By looking at the most popular indie bands music videos we will get a lot of inspiration and ideas for our own music videos. The options we gave we all bands of the indie rock/indietronica genres. The two most popular were MGMT and The Wombats. This question turned out to be a success as the two most popular bands turned out to be of the indietronica genre. We will look at these bands’ music videos to seek inspiration. After asking this question it was obvious what our music video needed. We aim to use all of the conventions listed to help us gain an indietronica feel to our music video. The video needs lots of bright colours and fast paced editing techniques to make our audience satisfied. One of out target audience ticked the box ‘Other’ and stated the video needs lots of fast cuts. By looking at the results to this question we can see that our target audience expect to see a band performing and a story line when watching indietronica videos. This is good as we wanted to do this type of music video. However, we plan to combine these by having the band plan in the storyline at the end.

C A B D E F Mika’s album cover (D) was the most popular. Our target audience chose this because: It’s colourful, unusual, random, appealing and eye catching. I think this is due to the creativity of the album. The fact it is an illustration differs to most album covers which are photographs. Our target audience mainly read Kerrang! magazine. By finding this out we can look at how Kerrang! promote albums in their magazine and use this to help us with designing the album advert.

We asked our audience which of these promotional album posters they preferred. 57% of our audience said ‘C‘ was their favourite, reasoning for this was as follows: It looks hand drawn; more unusual than the photo; Simple and effective; Its different and unique as its not a photo. People were also keen on ‘D’, reasons for this Were: Iconic photo; has album cover on it; text stands out and it also has a good colour scheme. This supports the album cover that the target audience preferred as it is drawn and not an actual photo. A B C Text D E

Summary of Findings With our results we know that our music video for ‘Helena Beat’ by Foster The People should be aimed at year olds and majority male. The people who gave us the findings for our results were majority students with a low income, therefore their source of watching music videos are most likely to come from Youtube or TV as they spend most of their time on computers or sitting in front of a television. Most of the people we asked were from harlow or very local, therefore their response to our questions would be generalised and reflective of the rest of the youth in harlow. This will help us with the production of our music video as we know their answers were accurate and will help our video become part of popular culture among the local area.

Proposal With our results we found that our audience were big fans of The Wombats and MGMT. Therefore we will look at their videos in response to this and see how we could incorporate features from their videos into our own production. Our audience prefer band performing/storyline style, therefore it would be best to take their advice and use this music video method as it will have more potential for the target audience . The question involving the conventions of an indietronica music video was useful as it showed us that all the conventions are popular, so we will be involving all of them in our video. The album cover and promotion poster will be very colourful, illustrative and surreal, but will convey an appropriate message. Our target audience also like the music magazine ‘Kerrang!’ therefore by looking at how they advertise CD’s and musicians tour dates we will be able to get a good idea of how to present and visually communicate our CD cover/advert
