Young Mariners Trip Y52015

Staff  Mrs Willis  Mr Harrison  Mrs Burman  Mr Hairon  Mrs Redwood  Mrs Ellis  Mr Kneller

Accommodation  Lee Valley Youth Hostel  Right next to the Young Mariners base  Wooden chalet style accommodation  3 lodges completely booked out by Redbourn  Rooms range from sleeping 2-8 people in a mixture of single and bunk beds.  Each room has its own en-suite bathroom and shower  Each lodge has its own kitchen and lounge area.

Food  Full cooked breakfast and 3 course dinner  Provided packed lunch on Wednesday and Thursday.  The children who have school lunches on a Tuesday will be provided with a packed lunch from school.  Children who normally bring a packed lunch on a Tuesday will need a packed lunch on the day of departure- Tusaday.  Plenty of choice. Several options. No one was hungry last year!!  YHA will cater for all dietary needs.

Food

Sleeping arrangements  The children will be asked to choose a list of friends with whom they would like to share.  We will attempt to give each child at least 1 friend from their list. They may get more but that will depend on room numbers and combinations.  This is a tricky thing to sort out and some children may get someone they haven’t chosen in their room.

Activities  Herts Young Mariners Base  Kayaking  Rock climbing  Raft Building  Bell boating  Lee Valley education service – landscape walk and art activity

Kit list – as already given out  It is very important that the children have several sets of clothing as they will get wet. The older the better.  No jeans as they restrict movement and are heavy when wet.  2 pairs trainers including one which will get wet.  Red school cap – for safety and ease of spotting Redbourn children.  No strappy vest tops as the weather can be hot.  Waterproof sunscreen with a high factor.

Additional Items  No mobile phones, iPods, electrical games  Cameras at own risk – disposable cameras are ideal or bring in a memory stick to download staff photos.  No sweets or extra food – we are well fed and take additional biscuits and squash.  No pocket money  Every evening we like to give the children a drink and biscuit before bed. Please provide one packet of nut free biscuits which should be sent into school by Friday 1 st May

Safety  Children will not be allowed near the water without a life jacket. The centre staff are very strict about this.  Water depth is fairly shallow in most places on the lake however there is a manned safety boat on the lake at all times.  The lake is man made so has no flowing water entering it  Full risk assessments for the activities are held by the centre who are all fully qualified and CRB checked.  The Youth hostel is shared with the public but our lodges have lockable front doors.  The site is protected by fencing, a main gate and cctv cameras. There is no access to the water or lake except via the main gate which is locked at night.  Behaviour- good behaviour is paramount for the safety and enjoyment of all children and staff. Poor behaviour may result in the withdrawal of a child from an activity and in extreme cases parents may be requested to collect their child from Cheshunt.

Emergencies  Please do not contact the YHA or Young Mariners directly.  Phone the school office who will then contact us during office hours. At any other time please call the school mobile number ( )  We will you regularly with updates about our trip.  Should we be late arriving back the office will send a text to all parents/carers

Medicines  Should be named in a plastic bag with clear dosage instructions.  Hand to Mrs Burman on the morning of departure.  Mrs Burman will be responsible for the administration of any medicines while we are away.  Please ensure there is enough of your child’s medicine. Inhalers/Epipens should be full and in date. A spare should also be provided.  You have already signed to say that you are happy for your child to have Calpol. We will bring this.

Night issues.  If your child has any sleep issues, sleepwalking, night terrors, bedwetting, or has begun menstruating please make staff aware.  We are well trained to deal with a variety of these issues.

Questions  Please ask now or if you would prefer, speak to one of us individually at the end of the meeting.
