Some procedures and policies to provide success!

Homeroom Procedures: Come in with a smile…a positive attitude makes for a great day, I promise First task: Eat your breakfast quickly and quietly. Trash goes in trash bag on door when you’re finished. Liquid you are not drinking gets poured down the sink drain and container gets thrown away. Second task: Complete DOL on board. This will be completed in your Reading/ELA/Writing binder (for Mrs. Willis) in the first section. Third Task: Review DOL. Pack up and get ready to move to Mrs. Willis’s wonderful room!

Class Instruction Procedures: Come in with a smile…a positive attitude makes for a great day, I promise First task: Complete Daily Oral Science (DOS) within the first 5 minutes. I will set a timer when you enter the room. We will review the DOS before the timer goes off. I will collect homework and any notes during this time, as well. Second task: Discuss the purpose for the lesson/ “I can…” statements/pertinent vocabulary/activating information. ***If there are any new words, we’ll add them during this time to our Vocabulary section in the spiral notebook. Third task: Take part in the Guided Lesson and Activities planned.

Class Instruction Procedures: Fourth Task: Complete the Summarizing Writing Entry and write down homework in agenda. I will sign your agenda right before we leave. Fifth Task: Participate in Silent Sustained Reading (SSR). During this time, I will be conferencing with a select number of students. If it is not your conference day, you will read quietly to yourself until SSR is finished. If it is your conference day, I will call you to my desk and we’ll work on our SSR conference together. After you’re finished with me, you’ll return to your desk and continue reading until SSR is finished.

ANY QUESTIONS, SO FAR???

Take out your 5 Subject Spiral Notebook or Binder with 5 dividers: Please listen closely as I direct you on how to label your notebook/binder. Open the front cover and write your name (first and last) and homeroom teacher’s name on the top of the front cover. DO NOT WRITE THIS ON THE FIRST PAGE PLEASE. IF you have a binder, I’ll write your name and homeroom on a note card and tape it to your binder. On the first page of the first section, on the top, write DOS On the first divider (in the spiral notebooks) or after the second divider (in binders), write ACTIVATOR On the second divider (in the spiral notebooks) or after the third divider (in binders), write VOCABULARY On the third divider (in spiral notebooks) or after the fourth divider (in binders), write LESSON NOTES On the fourth divider (in spiral notebooks) or after the fifth divider (in binders), write SUMMARIZING/WRITING

Procedures and Policies for Mrs. Burke’s Science Class: “I need 5 minutes.” During the first 5 minutes of class, I ask that you do not communicate with me. You are responsible for completing your DOS during this time, and I am responsible for taking attendance, collecting homework, etc. If you have an emergency, I’d like to address it, but if you do not have an emergency I will tell you “I need 5 minutes.” “If I can hold it, you can try to, also.” We have worked in several restroom breaks during our classes together. I will only allow you to go to the restroom during these scheduled breaks…unless you feel you have something of immediate concern. There are other classes that need restroom times, as well, and we need to be courteous of the entire hall.

Procedures and Policies for Mrs. Burke’s Science Class: “I’m here to teach, you’re here to learn.” My job, as outlined by my employer, is to impart knowledge to you as students. My main focus during the time we have together is to teach you what I know and hopefully what you’ll also know by the end of the year. (What am I saying…what you will also know ). In order to do that, you’ll have to do your job and learn. This includes, but is not limited to, answering questions, participating in activities and labs, completing projects, and anything else that I assign you. I will only give you something to do to help you learn better, so I promise if I ask you to do it, it will help! Please accept work with a positive attitude and try to do your best…and that will be all I will ask from you.

ANY QUESTIONS, SO FAR???

“I’m also here to help.” If you ever need anything during class-from a tissue to wipe your runny nose to a sharpened pencil to help with a question-I’m here for you. We will be using signals, not our voices, to minimize class instruction interruption (Whoo…say that 5 times fast). The signals are: Procedures and Policies for Mrs. Burke’s Science Class: Raised pencil- needs to be sharpened Hand covering nose-need a tissue for a runny nose/sneezed/etc. Hand raised-need help or want to answer a question.

“I’m also here to help.” If you do raise your voice and not a signal, I will not respond to your request. I will continue to not respond until you raise the appropriate signal. “Is this going to interrupt instruction?” Again, my job is to teach and your job is to learn…so I will ask that you keep this question in mind. If there is something going on and you need to tell me something, there is a box on my desk labeled the “Take a Minute” box. You will jot me a quick note and I will read it when there is a chance. I do want to help, but if helping is going to interrupt instruction, I will not help immediately. Procedures and Policies for Mrs. Burke’s Science Class:

Classroom Rules: Let’s take a look at our rules for my classroom and discuss what each rule means. Now that we’ve discussed them…let’s tie them to being “Blakeney’s BEST”

Homework: I’ll assign homework on a daily basis. I’ll take it up during your DOS time. You’ll copy it down in your agenda during the last few minutes of class and I’ll sign your agenda to check that you’ve correctly copied down the homework. I’ll also be giving out each day’s homework as you leave. Any homework you do not complete during the week will be collected and you’ll complete it during your recess time on Fridays.

Recess To ensure we have all the time we need to become expert scientists, we’ll have recess on Friday afternoons with homeroom teachers. This will be a reward for appropriate behavior…and not having recess will be a consequence for inappropriate behavior. Recess will also be a class incentive. The other teachers will let me know if my homeroom students have earned all the letters that spell RECESS during the week and on Fridays after activity, we’ll have our recess time.
