Industrial Revolution  What: greatly increased output of machine-made goods that began in England during the 18 th century  Importance: the change that begins in Britain paves the way for modern industrial societies

Agricultural Revolution  By early 1700s, wealthy landowners started buying up much of the land  They will start dramatically improving farming methods  This will pave the way for the Industrial Revolution

Enclosure Movement  Wealthy landowners started to close off their lands with fences or hedges  Results:  Experimented with new agricultural methods  Forced small farmers to give up farming and move to the cities

Increase in FOOD Production  Crop Rotation: rotate the crop you harvested to make the soil fertile  Livestock Breeding: breed the healthiest animals to produce bigger animals….which equals more FOOD

 More Food AND  Better Living Conditions  =Population Boom

Why Britain was the 1 st to Industrialize:  1. Large population of workers  2. Had lots of natural resources (water power, coal, iron, rivers, harbors)  3. Businesspeople and banks invested and encouraged the manufacture of new inventions  4. Stable government in Britain (no wars fought on British land)
