Kinds Of STD’s (Unit 23.1) Journal What are 3 SERIOUS questions you have about intercourse, birth, and/or STD’s? Make sure you leave space for a response. I will only respond to serious questions.

Chlamydia- most common bacterial STD in the US. Male Symptoms Painful and frequent Urination Yellow discharge If left untreated, it can lead to nongonoccal urethritis Inflammation of the urethra Female Symptoms Over 2 Million infected each year ages Yellow vag discharge Can Cause P.I.D. VERY serious infection Can cause infertility Can be passed through birth (Eye drops)

More on Chlamydia Over 4 million cases a year Can be cured with antibiotics!! Can cause permanent damage to eyes and lungs of children if the child survives.

Trichomoniasis- protozoan infection of the Urinary tract or Vag Male Symptoms Itching Clear discharge Painful Urination Can Cause Urethritis if untreated Female symptoms Itching Burning Green/yellow discharge Odor (gross) Painful urination Can cause vaginitis

More CAN BE CURED WITH A DR VISIT

Gonorrhea A Serious infection of the urinary tract of males and females along with female reproductive organs. Can be passed to infants during birth Prevented with eye drops High risk people (promiscuous) should be Checked REGULARLY. Takes penicillin or stronger antibiotics to cure

Symptoms Males THICK pus like discharge VERY painful urination Can lead to urethritis and sterility Females Painful urination Pus like discharge Can lead to PID and/or Sterility Much milder symptoms May not be noticed.

Examples

Genital warts: Most common STD AKA: HPV Virus for LIFE After a few months, warts may appear around genitals Warts can be removed, but with the virus still intact, they may return. Warts may itch or burn

HPV Can remain in the body for years dormant Most don’t know they have it. 50% Chance of contracting it 1 st time Can cause cervical cancer Annual physical

Genital Herpes Produces painful blisters around the genitals Virus that causes it is herpes Simplex Usually produces symptoms 2-10 days Symptoms may be hardly noticeable Flu like or tingling at site of infection Later they will develop into blisters A physician can prescribe to dry up the blisters NO CURE-

To prevent spread of the disease Refrain from sexual activity during and right after outbreaks. During outbreaks keep the area dry and clean. Women should have C-sections to prevent spread of the infection to a child. It can cause the child blindness.

Syphilis- Serious STD that happens in stages. Primary 1-12 weeks, chancre (a painful sore) appears May not be noticeable The chancre disappears but leaves a scar. The bacteria however, spreads to another area of the body. Secondary 2-8 weeks after the first stage Sores in the mouth and flu like symptoms A non-itchy rash appears usually on the feet/hands If you don’t seek treatment… the disease moves on

2 more phases Latent Syphilis Symptoms may disappear for YEARS When this happens, the bacteria attacks internal organs (Brain and heart) Permanent damage Can cause death Only way to test is by blood Late Syphilis Brain damage, paralysis, heart disease

More on Syphilis First two stages are the most contagious Even blood is contagious Pregnant women can pass it along at any stage: Congenital syphilis- damages skin, bones, eyes, teeth, and liver of baby

IT CAN BE CURED Its is best to catch it in the early stages because in the later stages, any damage that had been done is permanent.  If a pregnant woman gets treated early, congenital syphilis may be avoided All it takes is antibiotics…

Cancroid- Bacterial STD Very similar symptoms to syphilis. Painful sores May have a grey coating… gross VERY infectious Provide open sores for other pathogens can infect the person Can be treated with antibiotics

Candidiasis- a vag infection caused by a fungus AKA moniliasis Usually not caused by sexual contact However, it can be passed! Women have a white “cheesy” discharge and itching. Men may not have symptoms. Can be passed Orally!

Candidiasis continued IT’S A COMMON YEAST INFECTION Caused by different conditions in the Vag. There is a bacteria that fights off this fungus, but if something happened to the bacteria, the fungi may thrive. Can be fixed with antibiotics. OTC meds may help as well…

Hepatits B & C are STD’s that attack the liver and are spread from blood to blood contact Often unaware of Infection B is 2-6 weeks after infected C is harder to Detect Most common symptoms: Fatigue Abdominal pain Not hungry Nausea Vomiting Jaundice

Other things that may happen with B & C Cirrhosis: where scar tissue takes place of liver tissue Liver Cancer

Other Info- Can be diagnosed with a blood test Meds can help relieve the symptoms No Cure Bed rest & Diet B has a vaccination: Children get it C is seen as a threat to the community for years to come (Anderson)

Pubic Lice & Scabies Pubic Lice AKA Crabs Insects Causes a rash Spread through any physical contact Scabies Infestation of mites Itching Rash

Fixing the Problem Both can be cured Wash clothes & bedding in boiling water frequently. Shaving the hair off helps

Information to Know Stay informed: Don’t be afraid to talk to your partner(s). Abstinence will always be the safest way Contact your local health center (Kankakee) if you suspect any symptoms may be an STD If you ever test positive, may sure you inform your partner(s) so they can be checked and helped.

Questions What is the most common BACTERIAL std in our country? Which STDs can be Treated, but not cured? What is congenital syphilis? Why is it risky to share a toothbrush with someone who has hepatitis B?
