3 CHLAMYDIA Caused by bacteria
Causes an inflammation of the male and female reproductive organs. Symptoms are very mild or absent. Can lead to sterility if left untreated. Can be treated and cured with antibiotics.

4 GONORRHEA Caused by bacteria.
Symptoms include; genital irritation, pain during urination, discharge from penis or vagina, and abdominal tenderness. Sterility can occur if left untreated. Can be treated and cured with antibiotics.

5 SYPHILIS Caused by bacteria (spirochete). Diagnosed in 4 stages.
Primary Stage – Causes lesions usually on the genital areas of the infected person called chancres. Chancres are hard, round, painless sores that can be the size of a pimple to a dime. The chancres will disappear after a few weeks, but the infection remains present, and one can still infect others.

6 Skin rash and lesions on the hands and soles of the feet develop.
Secondary Stage - Skin rash and lesions on the hands and soles of the feet develop. Rash may cover the entire body, but does not itch. This will eventually go away as well, but may last up to a year.

7 Latent Stage - Neurosyphilis Stage -
No obvious symptoms. A person can remain in this stage for many years. The bacteria is now spreading to other parts of the body and destroying vital organs. Neurosyphilis Stage - Blindness, paralysis, liver damage, mental disorders and death may occur. Because this disease is caused by bacteria, it can be treated and cured with antibiotics if detected early enough.

8 HERPES Caused by a virus Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) There is NO cure.
Once infected, a person will remain infected for the rest of their life with periodic “outbreaks”. 2 types: HSV 1 and HSV 2

9 HSV 1 causes cold sores and fever blisters on lips or in mouth.
HSV 2 causes sores or lesions in the genital areas. Sores can be very small, but are usually itchy or painful. HSV 1 and HSV 2 can cause each other.

10 GENITAL WARTS Caused by a virus. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
There are over 100 different types of the virus. Can be passed through sexual contact or through infected bed sheets, towels, or clothing. Warts may be removed, but they may come back. In women, HPV is directly linked to cervical cancer. (Vaccine)***GARDASIL*** At least 50% of all people who are sexually active will get HPV at some point in their lives. There is NO cure.

12 HEPATITIS B Caused by a virus. Affects the liver.
Passed through sexual contact and through blood and bodily fluids. Causes severe illness. Symptoms include fever and fatigue that can last for months. Most people will get rid of the virus on their own within 6 months. 10% will develop lifelong infection. 1% will die from this disease in the early stages. There is a vaccine available to prevent infection.
