Welcome to 8 th grade RELA! Work on the student survey while we wait for class to get started

Welcome to 8 th grade RELA! Let’s go over some basics / procedures so you can know what to expect and what I expect. (These notes will be kept in your RELA notebook.)

What is RELA? In RELA, we strengthen some key reading / language arts concepts. We read. We will read a minimum of 10 – 15 minutes a day (today’s reading is a whole group activity with these notes).

MY READING SUMMER FAVES

We read: You start reading as soon as you walk in Some days we will all walk in and read the same thing If you brought something to read, great The bookshelves are ready for you if you didn’t The only way you become a reader is by reading.

Your summer reading project is due September 11th.

YOU can expect: To READ (choice is important- you will read a lot of texts that you select by yourself or from sets that I recommend) To WRITE You need a composition book, Post It Notes, & Earbuds KNOWSYS Reading multiple texts at a time

You will receive a pencil without an eraser from me. Give it back Note made in HAC Pick up at the podium (side wall)

ENTERING THE ROOM Sit in your assigned seat Read / copy ROAR in your agenda You start reading as soon as you walk in

ENTERING THE ROOM Never enter the room without me – Even if the door is open- you are not welcome in this room without me.

BACKPACKS / PURSES Get anything you need out before class Do not open unless permission has been given We will start packing up during the 6 th grade bell

TARDIES: To avoid confusion: If the door is closed and you aren’t inside:: you are tardy. Report to Ms. Funderburke (a note is made in HAC)

To avoid confusion: *There is no negotiating a tardy. *There is no discussion. *There is no excuse requested / required.

COMMUNICATION Look at the speaker Raise your hand to get my attention Discussion is made under direction of the teacher

When you see this: stop!

Interruptions / When someone Knocks Keep working Keep silent They can’t have you until they talk to me.

ROAR Copy daily – if you are missing an assignment, it is your responsibility to know which one – this is how you will know. I will never look up a missing assignment for you. Check HAC.

MAKE UP WORK Ask me about it Check the website (handouts will be under the CLICK HERE tab) Check another student’s ROAR
