Dual Enrollment

What is Dual Enrollment  Dual enrollment classes are taken at your local high school and taught by high school instructors. Students are able to receive Community College Credit.  Textbooks are provided by the school  Some Dual Enrollment classes require placement tests before enrolling.  Teachers are specially qualified to teach college curriculum

Making a difference –38 Graduates who received an Associates Degree! 3 Desert Vista Grads: Chase Boeke, Angelique Cappo, Rex Moore, Megan Yousefelahi and Sepehr Rostamzadeh

Benefits of Dual Enrollment  Increases retention and completion of college  Helps prepare students for the academic rigor of college  76% of students are not prepared academically and 43% of 2-year community college students require remedial course work  Helps with job placement 4

Benefits of Dual Enrollment  Increasing the number of underserved students who are ready for college.  Providing realistic information to high school students about the skills they need for college. (Most high school graduates have no idea they won’t be able to enroll in a college class but need remediation courses before they begin.)  Saving time and money by compressing the years of financial support needed to attend college.  Creating a smoother transition for students and feedback from K-12 to postsecondary systems. (Hoffman, Vargas & Santos, 2009).

Course Transferability  Most credits will transfer to all of Arizona’s public colleges and universities  There is a high success rate in transferring courses to out-of-state colleges and universities due to Rio Salado’s accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission and the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partners  Confirm transferability with colleges and universities

Transfer Credit Information  Use the Course Equivalency Guide at to learn how every class transfers to ASU, NAU and U of A.  Out of state: Contact Admissions Office at each college.  Common practices of out of state include:  Accepting all credits  Accepting all credits but NOT in student’s major  Accepting credits only for classes beyond graduation requirements(5 th year of Math accepted but not the 4 th year of English)  Accepting no credits

Ready, Set, Graduate!  College Completion rates are dismal - Nationally less than 50% of students enrolled in college will earn an associate degree within three years or a bachelor’s degree within six years.  Drop-out rate alarming! - 25% of full-time freshman at four-year institutions drop out and 39% of the freshmen at two-year institutions do not return the following fall. The rates are even worse for part-time students (Karp, 2012).

Momentum  Students who earn 20 dual enrollment credits have a 28% higher chance of graduating from college.  11% more likely to persist on to second year  Dual enrollment fosters positive attitudes toward earning a post-secondary degree

Dual Enrollment students are 2.2 times more likely to enroll in a two or four- year college.

Dual credit students are 2 times more likely to return the second year and 1.7 times more likely to complete a college degree

Want to Ask Questions in person?  Meet Claudia Bermudez in the Counseling Career Center  Tuesday, August 11 th,  Thursday August13 th  Tuesday August18 th  Meet her in the Counseling Career Center during lunch!

All paperwork will be due August 26 th - - Wednesday Foreign Language, English, Fine Arts and August 27 th - - Thursday Math, Business, Science, and Social Studies

Student Registration  Students go to and follow the steps.  All students must be admitted to the college before registering for class.  Paperwork is submitted to the high school on August 26 th and 27th  Students pay online, call the cashier’s office or pay in-person  Registrations processed in 7-10 business days from when they turned in their application.  Students will receive an enrollment confirmation and a postcard reminder to pay.  Registration changes: for New students: There will be an extra step. They will need to complete the Admissions process at their Student Center before they can enroll in classes at our Dual website. Detailed instructions will be available on the Fall flier available from the teacher or pick up one in the Counseling office. It is also on Rio’s Dual registration website. This a step in the direction of trying to enable Dual students to eventually do all of the registration process online. It will also allow our Enrollment Services Department to process paperwork in a more timely fashion.

Registration  CHANGE from previous year: Students must get admitted to the college before registering for class.  Students will be dropped if they have not paid by September 21.  Once the September 21 date is past only students who pay can be reinstated.  No more reinstatements after October 1.  Register for both Fall and Spring classes at the same time – especially follow-on classes like ENG101 and ENG102.  Submit registration for all classes at once (not one packet for every class).

Payment  Students must pay online, by calling the cashier office at or in-person at 2323 W. 14 th St. Tempe  Students will receive an business days after submitted registration packet to confirm enrollment and outline payment options  Payment plans can be set up once this is received.  Tuition Assistance- Students who applied for financial assistance last Spring have been notified of their status. If students applied after the deadline and met the qualifications, they were put on the waitlist but are not guaranteed tuition assistance – Depends on available funding.  Drop Date is Sept 21. Students may be reinstated through October 1st, but only if payment is made in full
