Dual Credit 2013-14 NECC/Norfolk Senior High School

W hat is dual credit? Dual credit classes are classes taken at the high school for both high school and college credit. Students get credit on both a high school and college transcript.

How does dual credit help me? Dual credit can give you a “head start” on earning college credits. Taking dual credit classes may mean you can eliminate a class required in your college program.

How does dual credit help me? Dual credit classes may mean you can add electives to your college program, have a lighter load during college, or spend less time completing a college degree.

How does dual credit help me? The tuition (cost) is lower than regular college classes, and in most cases you don’t have to buy a textbook.

How do I find out if dual credit will help me? The only way to be sure a dual credit class meets a college requirement is to check with the college you plan to attend. If you aren’t sure which college you plan to attend, you can check with more than one college. The registrars’ office at the college can tell you what you need to know.

Am I ready for dual credit? You are a college student in addition to being a high school student. Are you ready for the responsibility? Consider: grade point average, initiating teacher/college contact if you have concerns/questions, testing and paperwork are the student’s responsibility

Do I qualify? For math and English courses students must meet testing score requirements to prove you are ready for college work. You can qualify through ACT scores or Compass test scores.

ACT You would have taken the test already in order to use those scores.

COMPASS This test is given at NECC Welcome Center. You may just show up: Wednesday Aug. 21: 2:30-5:00 (reading/writing-start by 3:30; math start by 4:00) Thursday Aug. 22: 3:30-7:00 (reading/writing-start by 5:50; math start by 6:00) TAKE A PHOTO ID WITH YOU!

OR Call the NECC testing center and set up a time that works with your schedule!

What does dual credit at NECC cost? Dual credit costs $69.00 per credit hour. This rate is less than regular college classes at NECC. Community colleges are the least expensive college option in Nebraska.

How can I pay for dual credit? ACE scholarships: The state of Nebraska has funding to cover the cost of tuition for college classes for students on free/reduced lunches or who have other financial difficulties. There is a link to the application website from the Counseling Center website.

Do you need help applying for ACE? Come to the College and Career Center (by the weight room) during the noon hours the week of August 19th. A counselor will have to e-mail you the documentation you will need to upload to the application website.

Paying-continued Norfolk Public Schools Foundation has a scholarship available for up to $100. Applications are due on Friday, August 23, at 4:00 in the Counseling Center. Recipients will be informed by letter by Sept. 6.

Paying-continued NECC accepts check, credit cards, or can set up a payment plan with you.

Due dates Testing for math and English must be completed so you know you qualify before we will turn in your application. You must turn in your application to the Counseling Center by September 12 at 4:00 if you want us to hand it in for you. You can turn it in yourself at NECC by Friday, September 13.

Do you need help filling out the paperwork? NECC will have a representative in the College and Career Center at Senior High on Thursday August 22 during the lunch hours. Counselors will help during the lunch hour, also.
