2. Running Start saves you money!
What is Running Start?
Created in 1990 by the Washington State legislature
Juniors and seniors earn credit for high school requirements and a college degree
Up to 15 college credits per quarter with free or reduced cost tuition
Credits earned now will be used toward future university/college degrees
Running Start saves you money!

3. Running Start is for students who . . .
Juniors or seniors enrolled in a public high school.
Are ready for college-level coursework.
Students must place into college-level courses, i.e. English 101 or Math 107 or higher, based on one of the placement options.

4. NSC calendar
North Seattle College: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer terms
Summer quarter is not covered by Running Start
Each quarter is 11 weeks long, summer is 8 weeks long
Spring breaks do not always coincide with high school breaks
Student needs to contact instructors before absence if they will be missing any class due to vacations or high school conflicts (testing, sports, etc.)
NSC does not have a mid-winter break
Join Running Start Fall, Winter or Spring quarter

5. Classes: A little or a lot
Part-time or Full-Time
Running Start students can take as few as one class per quarter or as many as three
Complete high school requirements faster and explore new subjects
Classes must be college-level (numbered 100 or above) to be covered by Running Start

6. Credits? 5 college credits (1 quarter)= 1 high school credit (1 year)
Classes are typically 5 credits and meet about 5 hours per week.

10. Running Start or IB Courses?
What are some of the differences between Running Start and IB courses?
Running Start IB
Classes are taken in 11 weeks
Classes are taken for an entire year
Student earns the grade at the end of the quarter and receives college credit
Student must take the IB placement exam at the end of the year
Student is starting their permanent college transcript
IB scores will only count as college credit if the score is high enough

11. Running Start costs
Tuition is at free or reduced cost and covered by the high school, for up to 15 credits
Students are responsible for:

Books and supplies*
Transportation
College ID card fee of $5
Books can cost $50 - $400 per quarter.
*Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch may borrow books from our Bookfund library and have class fees waived

13. How do I apply?
Please review yellow application packet.

14. Four-year institutions
Running Start students apply as freshmen – even if they will have an associate degree
Students still required to take SAT and/or ACT tests
Students pay for NSC transcripts to be sent to the colleges

15. Where will credits transfer?
All Washington state public universities and most in-state private universities
When applying to universities outside of Washington, check with the university’s admissions office on how they will accept Running Start credits
Some universities may not accept dual-enrollment credits

16. Making the most of Running Start
Students can earn an associate degree and high school diploma through North Seattle College
Students taking many Running Start classes should begin preparing for their college major.
Students are beginning to create their permanent college transcript.

17. Summer Classes
Summer Students entering Running Start in the Fall may take summer classes
Tuition and fees are student’s responsibility
Register for Fall and Summer Classes at the same time
Letter or from High School Counselor required to take summer classes

18. Dates and Deadlines
Fall New student registration begins May 22nd
Mandatory new student orientation will be September 13th and 14th
Fall quarter begins September 25th
