Welcome to Literacy! Room 601 Mrs. Grundel Instructions: Please find your seat and begin working on the two documents at your desk.

Let’s Review Our Guidelines and Procedures Mrs. G’s Literacy Class Let’s Review Our Guidelines and Procedures

Who is this teacher as a person? A little about myself…

Will Mrs. G. treat me fairly? YES, ALWAYS!! Even if we may not always agree on the meaning of fair  Stop per 1-2

What will we be doing this year? Reading, writing, and reading some more! Authoring our own unique stories. Learning, listening, and leading! Becoming lifelong learners.

How will I be graded? 98 – 100 = A+ 93 – 97 = A 90 – 92 = A- 78 – 79 = C+ 73 – 77 = C 70 – 72 = C- 67 – 69 = D 66 and below = F

What are the codes to live by in this classroom? Follow all guidelines and procedures. PLEASE and THANK YOU are the “magic” words. The Three R’s: Respect each other’s ideas and opinions Be responsible for yourself and your actions Take risks in reading and writing

Mrs. Grundel’s Classroom Contract Guidelines Procedures Success starts with you…

Guideline #1 When you enter the classroom, immediately gather the materials you will need for the day. Be in your assigned seat and working on the Literacy Link as soon as you have what you need.

“Literacy Link” aka Do Now or Jump Start The Literacy Link will either be on the blackboard or the overhead. As soon as you walk in, please take the first few minutes to complete the assignment in your classwork section in your notebook. Please write the date at the top of each page of your notebook.

Guideline #2 Bring ALL your books and materials to class AND take them with you when you leave (except the materials that DO NOT leave the classroom – more on that later!).

Guideline #3 Follow directions the FIRST time they are given.

Guideline #4 Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity! Celebrate each other’s differences and unique qualities.

Guideline #5 Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the SGS and Franklin Township Schools student handbook.

Special Guideline This classroom is a “No Whining Zone.” That means that there will be no whining for ANY reason. Everything I do is in your best interest, so please respect the “No Whining Zone” this year!

Following Guidelines will result in… Verbal acknowledgement A stress-free learning environment A pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere. Stars!

Not Following Guidelines will result in… 1st – Warning and documentation 2nd – Action Plan, Parental Contact, lunch detention or after school detention 3rd – Disciplinary Referral

Mrs. Grundel’s Action Plan What is the problem? What is causing the problem? (Please list the factors) What plan will you use to solve the problem? ___________________ Date ___________________________ ________________________________ Student’s Signature Parent/Guardian Signature

Classroom Procedures Explain, Rehearse, Reinforce!

Entering the Room Please enter quietly. Sharpen a pencil if necessary (always have at least one spare writing utensil. I do not like when students sharpen pencils in the middle of class). Have a seat. Take out your materials, including any homework from the previous night. Review the teaching point. Begin bell work (Literacy Link) assignment

Getting your attention I CLAP THEN RAISE MY HAND, YOU STOP EVERYTHING, CLAP AND RAISE YOUR HAND!

Going to the Bathroom Make sure there is not another boy or girl already out. Raise your hand with two fingers crossed. I will acknowledge your request. Sign out on the clipboard, and remember to sign back in. No bathroom breaks during instruction to the whole class.

Paper Heading Your Name Date Language Arts/Period Assignment

Student Responsibility Card aka “The Pink Slip” This is for students who do not have the assigned homework. Fill it out Sign and date it Turn it in when I collect the homework Five pink slips will result in an action plan and a call home

You’ve been Pink Slipped! Date:____________ Printed Name: ___________________ You’ve been Pink Slipped! Completing your homework or assignment is your responsibility as a student. Missing Assignment: ___________________________________ I do not have my homework today because: _____ I did the assigned homework, but I did not bring it to class. _____ I chose not to do my homework. _____ I forgot to do my homework. _____ I did not have the appropriate materials at home. _____ Other – please explain below. _____________________________________________________________________ Signature: ________________________________

Finish Classwork Early… What do I do next??? Finish any work for this class that is not complete. Steal a moment and read. Work ahead on upcoming assignments for this class only.

Classroom Discussions PLEASE participate I want to hear what you have to say…at an appropriate time of course  Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion Raise your hand when you are ready to participate If you have a question I was unable to answer in class, write it down and ask when we are done with the lesson or discussions.

Moving around the room You must ask permission. Do not ask to leave during note-taking or instruction to the whole class, unless it is an emergency. For a scheduled checkout: please let me know in the beginning of class, quietly raise your hand to get my attention, pack up quietly and leave. Please make sure you retrieve any work you may have missed.

Class Dismissal The teacher dismisses you, not the bell. Do no start packing up until you have been told to do so. I will officially dismiss you with “Have a nice day!” or something else pleasant!

Always remember I will come prepared to teach you each day, if you come prepared to learn. I will teach with enthusiasm and creativity to the best of my ability, if you always try your best. I will respect you for the unique person you are, if you respect me in return. I will provide a safe and orderly classroom environment, and expect you to follow guidelines and procedures. I will help you REACH your best, YOU, if YOU believe you can achieve!
