Welcome to Mrs. Thomas’ Classroom 8th Grade Science Room 101

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME! I grew up in Lancaster, OH. I went to Sherman and graduated from Lancaster High School. I am married. I have a 7 year old daughter, Reagan. I have a Boxer named Dutch.

EDUCATION I have 2 Bachelor degrees from Ohio University. GO BOBCATS! Environmental Health Science Middle Childhood Education: Math and Science

What do I enjoy? I like to spend time with my family. I like dogs. I like watching football. I like gardening. I enjoy local history and do genealogy research. I like to hike.

Welcome I teach because I WANT TO!!! High Expectations for all students. Fairness and Respect are a must. Respect everyone and everything.

What will I be doing this year?

How will I be graded? Summative Assessments including: Homework Weekly Reviews Labs In-Class Activities Projects Quizzes Tests in science class. Test and Quizzes will be announced at least 3 days in advance. I will post grades, homework assignments and quiz/test dates in ProgressBook. YOU will NOT be graded on formative assessments they are used to help me know what you know and what you need more help with. But I still expect you to try.

Mrs. Thomas’ Classroom Contract Rules Procedures

Rule # 1 Respect Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity. Don’t touch other people or their belongings. Don’t borrow things without asking. Raise your hand for permission to speak and listen while someone else is talking. Be polite and helpful to fellow students.

BE Responsible Rule # 2 Don’t waste class time. Follow directions quickly the first time they are given. Be in your assigned seat working on the assigned bellwork when the tardy bell rings. Do your own work. Make smart choices.

Rule # 3 Prepared Bring all your required materials to class every day. Complete all your work on time. Be ready to pay attention, ask questions, participate and learn. Learn from your mistakes and make improvements.

BE POSITIVE Rule # 4 Come in with a smile. Be ready to try something new. Try your best every day. Believe in your ability to succeed, I do!!! When all else fails, keep trying and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Special Rule This classroom is a “No Whining Zone”. That means that there will be no whining, for ANY reason. Everything that I do is in your best interest, so please respect the “No Whining Zone” this year.

Severe Clause Any student who uses profanity, fights, damages school property (this includes the property of the teacher and other students), or is disrespectful (as defined by the teacher) will be sent to the office IMMEDIATELY.

Getting Your Attention I will Say “Class” You will Say “Yes” (in the same way I said it!) I will wait for everyone to be quiet. I will begin speaking.

Entering the Room Please enter quietly. Have a seat. Take out your materials. Write down the learning target in your notebook. Begin bellwork assignment.

When you are tardy . . . Have a seat and take out Enter quietly. Excused: Place excuse in the basket on my desk. Unexcused: Mark date on sign-out sheet. Have a seat and take out your materials.

After an Absence Go to the homework notebook. Copy the homework. Retrieve any handouts. Sign the notebook.

Classroom Discussions PLEASE participate. I want to hear what you have to say. Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion. If your question is off the topic, write it down and ask later.

Student Responsibility Card This is for students who do not have the assigned homework and/or materials. Fill it out. Sign and date it. Turn it in with the homework papers.

Class Dismissal “Have a nice day!” The teacher dismisses you, not the bell. Do not start packing up prior to the bell. Your entire area must be clean before you leave. Wait until the teacher finishes and officially dismisses you with “Have a nice day!”
