October 1 Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing fall break! Phonics: We will learn how to form and recognize uppercase and lowercase.

Star Students Math 11/12-11/16 Literacy Calendar Birthdays KJ – 11th Our book of the week is “Moccasins” and our sight words are “at & yes”. We will spend the next few weeks talking about all things Thanksgiving! We will continue to practice proper letter formation in our “Handwriting Without Tears” book. Please make sure that when your child is writing at home, they are starting their name with a capital letter and the rest lower case. They are really working hard on this at school! In Reading Workshop, we will continue our Fiction Unit of Study. This week students will be looking at character traits and how what characters do and say helps us understand the story better. One of the books we will be using as a mentor text is a Piggie and Elephant book. The kids really enjoy these and they serve as a great model for studying characters. In Writing Workshop, students have begun using folder “offices” that have ideas of things they can write about, their jolly phonics sounds, and a handwriting without tears page with all upper & lower case letters. This “office” helps to give them ideas and support as they begin to write more independently. They are enjoying making mini books about things they know and like. Calendar 11/15 – Parent/Teacher Conferences 4:00-7:00pm 11/19 – Early Release Day/ 12:50 Dismissal - Parent/Teacher Conferences 1:00-7:00pm 11/21-11/23 – No School/ Thanksgiving Break Birthdays KJ – 11th Lora – 13th Sam – 13th! Math This week students will be finishing Module 4. They will be working with ten frames and being able to subitize groups of counters to 10. They will also be looking at unstructured arrangements on a ten frame. With these arrangements, students will visualize the counters being moved to a more familiar arrangement so that they can identify the number without counting. Students see this ten frame and mentally move the counter from the top to the bottom and automatically recall that as a representation of 6.
