1 Math Star Students Literacy Birthdays 10/1-10/5 Calendar 10/1 Sayagan
This week in Jolly Phonics we will learn the letter sounds for z, w, ng, v, & oo/oo . Please continue to practice them at home daily. Our book of the week is “My Friend at School” and our sight word is “my”. We will spend a lot of time discussing our friends here at school. We will continue to practice proper letter formation in our “Handwriting Without Tears” book. In Reading Workshop, students will be thinking about themselves as readers and how we choose books that interest us. They will begin “book shopping” to choose new books for their book bins. They have been doing a great job building their stamina during “Read to Self” and are up to 12 minutes! I am so proud of how well they are doing. They will continue to practice using their Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish reading strategies. In Writing Workshop, students will continue writing their “I Like” books. Last week we read the book, “Library Mouse” and discussed the author that lives in each of us. During our writing workshop time we will be looking at books through our “writer’s lens”. We will discuss why authors or illustrators choose to write/draw certain things. Then students will have the opportunity to apply those techniques to their own writing. Math This week the students will be working with a “number track”. Students will explore the relative position of numbers. They will be identifying missing numbers in a sequence, numbers that come just before and just after a given number. It’s important for your child to distinguish between the terms: before, after, just before and just after. You can practice counting backwards with your child. Start at any number between 5 and 10 and see if your child can count back to 1. If your child has this mastered, see if they can count backwards or forward from a higher number.
