1 Math Star Students Literacy Birthdays 10/23-10/27 Calendar 10/30 Jacob
We completed our Jolly Phonics study of letter sounds! Please continue to practice them at home daily. Our book of the week is “Little Brother” and our sight word is “to”. We will talking about our families this week. We will continue to practice proper letter formation in our “Handwriting Without Tears” book. This week will begin practicing our lower case letters. At home, please encourage your child to write their name with only the first letter capitalized. We will be working on this at school. In Reading Workshop, we will continue to look at familiar patterns in fiction stories and common story elements. In Writing Workshop, we have been using lessons from the Grammar Unit. This week students will look at times we use capital letters. They will continue to practice writing about things they know and care about. They have learned that authors tell stories through pictures as well as words. We are focusing on adding details to our pictures that help the reader understand the story. Calendar 10/31 – Halloween Parties (bring costumes to school) 11/3 – Institute Day/ No School 11/16 – Parent/Teacher Conferences 4:00-7:00 11/20 – Early Release/12:50 Dismissal Parent/Teacher Conferences 1:00-7:00 11/22-11/24 – No School/ Thanksgiving Break Birthdays None this week! Math This week the students will begin Module 4. They will be matching numerals to their number word and to a visual representation for numbers up to 10. Students will also continue working with 5 frames and 10 frames. These visual representations of numbers allows them to build a foundation of number sense. This is a major building block in their development for addition and subtraction. Star Students 10/30 Jacob 10/31 Halloween 11/ Andrew 11/2 Abby 11/3 No School *Star student gets to bring in a book for me to read to the class. When children can see this 10 frame as “7” they can also see that 2 and 5 = 7. They will also see that 3 more will make 10 or 7 is 3 away from 10. This automatic visual representation is called “subitizing.”
