1 Calendar Birthdays Math Star Students Literacy None this week!
9/24-9/28 Literacy We will continue our Jolly Phonics this week with the sounds: ai, j, oa, ie, & ee/or. Please continue to practice them daily at home. Our book of the week is “Bug Watching” and our sight word is “the”. In Reading Workshop, students will continue to build stamina during Read to Self. We only made it to 8 minutes last week. We are working on being able to read the whole time and stay in one spot. It may take time to reach our goal, but we won’t give up! Students have done a great job with our Eagle Eye reading strategy. They are learning that we use pictures to help tell the story and that reading means thinking. This week students will learn the Lips the Fish strategy. This strategy teaches the children to look at the first letter of a word AND the picture to help them figure out an unknown word. Students will also learn how to “book shop” for new books to add to their book bins. In Writing Workshop, students will work on being authors. They will use the sight words they have learned and write “I Like…” books. Students are working on stretching out words and writing the sounds they hear. Many of them just want someone to tell them how to spell everything. I really encourage the children to just write what they hear. If they focus on spelling, it gets in the way of their ideas, thinking , and independence.
