Literacy
Our book of the week is “Mrs. Wishy Washy” and the sight words are “said & us”. Moving forward, we will continue to have two new sight words each week. Please have your child practice reading and writing them at home as well.
In Reading Workshop, we will begin our Nonfiction Unit of Study. Students will learn about the differences between Fiction and Nonfiction books, as well as the text features that help us understand and learn new things. Examples of these features are: Table of Contents, Captions, Bold words, and the Glossary.
Students will also learn a new reading strategy: “Flippy the Dolphin”. This reminds students that when they come to a word they don’t know they can “flip” the vowel sound to a long sound to help them.
In Writing Workshop, students will begin our How-to Unit of Study. We will read books that model different styles of writing that use the “how to” format. Students will work on writing “how to books” using transition words such as first, next, then and
last.

This week students will begin Module 7. This module begins with teen numbers. The standard we are working towards is that students will be able to analyze and identify teen numbers as a group of 10 and some ones. For example, 15 is 1 ten and 5 ones or Students will work with this concept using a variety of hands on games and leaning centers.
