Chemistry ~Mr. Lynn Most notes in this class will be given on PowerPoint, if you are having trouble reading this… MOVE!!!! Sit where you would like, but I am assigning a seating chart today so I can learn your names. That means you are not going to be able to move for a bit.

Welcome to Chemistry

What you will need Writing utensil 3-ring binder OR notebook and folder Scientific Calculator Lab goggles

Calculator Minimum calculator for General Chemistry is a TI 30 (style). Avoid the multiview if possible. AP Chemistry requires TI-83 or higher, AP Calculus and Physics require a TI-89. TI N-Spire products also work. Bring in points from the Texas Instruments Box to me or a Math teacher!!

Rules and Discipline I will always treat you as adults unless you act like children, then you will be treated as such. Standard punishments- 1st warnings, then detentions, then a call home, finally referrals. Some actions can warrant severe penalty without a warning or detention.

Things I really hate Belligerence (attempting to start a fight) will not be tolerated in this classroom. No one will congregate at the door waiting for the bell to ring, or congregate in the doorway before class starts. You will be in class and in your seat when the bell stops ringing, otherwise you are tardy.

Basic rules Anything not covered in these rules will be ruled by common sense! You know what you are not supposed to do, so don’t do it. All rules still apply if a substitute teacher is in class!!

Policies Detentions will be served in my classroom, room 144, from 2:30 to 3:00. You may either serve it the evening after I give it to you, or the next evening. Tardiness- If the bell stops ringing and you are not in the classroom, you are tardy, even if it is by 1 second. No Exceptions! First two times you get a warning, the third time you get a detention, every other time you get a detention.

Stupid ways to lose points You will ALWAYS lose one point for… Not putting your name on a paper (includes labs with one person’s name on it an not others). Writing in Red/Purple/ or any shade I deem close enough to red.

Showing work ALL problems have an implied, “SHOW YOUR WORK”!!!!!! More important than the correct answer is how you got that answer. You can easily miss a problem and still get a good grade if I can see where you went wrong.

BYOT (Bring your own technology) You are allowed to use technological devices (smart phone, iPad etc.) to aid your learning process in this class provided you return the permission form to me. You may NOT use an electronic device if I determine it is hurting your learning process. If you put your homework away to do later, you may NOT use it. If you are working on your homework quietly, you may use it.

More Electronics You may NOT use an electronic device during a lab (it is a safety hazard). Using an electronic device when you are not allowed means it will be confiscated and handed to the principal. Texting and games are pretty much always banned You can always ask if you are allowed or not. Laser pointers, noise makers or ANYTHING distracting to the rest of the class is never allowed.

Lab Music I play music during labs. If you don’t like it ask me, I will turn it off. If you want me to turn it up ask me, I will turn it off. If you want me to … ask me, I will turn it off. No, I won’t play your iPod. If one student asks 3 times to turn it off it stays off all year

More Policies If you have to be removed from class you will automatically lose 10 points from your grade.  Late homework- you may turn things in one day late and receive 50% credit, two days late is 25%, Nothing may be turned in later than two days.

Make up assignments for absences Anything completed on an unexcused absence will count as a zero. It is your responsibility to get notes and any assignments you miss, I am not responsible for reminding you. You will have the number of days you were absent to make up an assignment. If you miss only the day of the test, you will make it up the day you come back!

Cheating All parties involved will receive a zero on whatever they were working on. This includes someone who is finished with their paper or test and allows someone to copy, or attempts to give an answer to someone even if their paper is already turned in! This also includes coping someone’s homework or in class assignment, not just tests.
