1 English 9 with Mrs. Priole
Welcome! English 9 with Mrs. Priole

2 Expectations for Classroom Behavior:
Pretty much every rule in my classroom involves respect – respecting the other members of the class as individuals with feelings, respecting me as a teacher, and respecting yourself by doing your best.

3 Hall Passes You may not take the pass in the first or last 5 minutes of the period. If you need to use the pass during the remaining time, please just get up quietly, take the pass, and put it back when you return. You are young adults and know your own needs; I have no desire to police your pee time. However, abuse of the pass will lead to pass restriction, parent and/or administration meetings, and a sign out/sign in system.

4 Lateness Lateness: It is expected that by the time the bell rings you will be in your seat, with your binder open to the appropriate category, copying down the Word of the Day. None of these activities require speaking to anyone around you. Failure to behave appropriately risks receiving a late. Every three latenesses equals a write-up and a loss of 5 points in your effort and participation grade.

5 Phone Policy Except in rare circumstances (Kahoot, etc), your phone should never be used in my class. If I see you using a phone, you will receive a Cell Phone Infraction Envelope. You will seal your phone inside the envelope for the rest of class and have a parent sign the CPI slip to be returned the next day.

10 Keep in mind that with the Remind 101 app, you can quickly and easily send me a text message if you have a question. You can also me at but it may take longer to get a response.

11 Supplies: 3-ring binder with 3 sections. Writing utensil
2 Sections: Class Notes and Vocabulary/Writing/Grammar Almost all dittos (class and homework) are 3-hole punched. You will be expected to put this handout away neatly in your notebook to prevent its loss. Writing utensil A copy of whatever we’re reading A flash drive for works in progress and writing.

12 Consistent Grade Categories:
Grading Tests/Quizzes Effort and Participation Homework Consistent Grade Categories: School-wide tests (midterm, final, etc) Research Paper (4th Quarter) Variables:

13 A Few Notes on Homework Every day I will send a “STUFF” folder around the class. If you have anything to hand in to me, please place it in the folder. If your homework is late because you were absent, please write “Absent” on your paper. Failure to submit homework on time will result in the loss of one grade (A check+ will become a check, etc). Homework is graded on a check system (Check+, Check, Check-, ½, ¼, or 0).

14 Absences If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to collect any missing handouts and homework from either from me or by downloading it from my website. It is also your responsibility to discuss any needed extra help with me and to hand in any work that may have been due while you were out. Missing homework due to absence will be due the day after you return.

15 My website contains: Copies of the text (if available)
Copies of daily handouts and homework assignments Important dates for class (test dates, long-term projects, etc).

16 Sometimes I may avoid posting upcoming files because I don’t want people getting too far ahead. If you notice something not posted soon after school, please send me a message through Remind 101 and I’ll get it up ASAP.

17 We are learning skills more than facts.
What is required to learn a skill? Someone who can teach you Willingness to learn Effort So, by basic math, YOU are doing 66% of the work here.

18 What Skills will we be focusing on?
Comprehension of what you read or hear. Thinking about what you have taken in. Communication of your thoughts and interpretations about what you’ve read or heard. EACH OF THESE DEPENDS ON THE OTHER. What Skills will we be focusing on?

19 Right and Wrong Answers
The only truly wrong answers are those that are factually wrong and can be disproven by evidence from the text. Your opinions, analysis, and interpretation on whatever we are reading is perfectly valid so long as you can support yourself with evidence from the text and/or RELIABLE sources Summary: It is your responsibility to prove yourself right.

20 In this way, you need to

23 Okay, time for a puzzle. Rules: Get into groups of 3-4. Each group will get an index card. I will display another puzzle on the screen and your group has to try and guess it. Write down your guess on the index card. If your group is right, you get 6 bonus points to E&P. BUT for every group that gets it right, those numbers go down. Don’t let other people hear you guessing!
