Foundations for Relationships One of the most basic human needs is to belong and feel loved Can be established by maintaining healthy relationships Relationships – bonds or connections you have with other people Family, friends, coworkers, etc.

Foundations for Relationships Some of the most important relationships in your life are w/ family members @ home Healthy family relationships strengthen all parts of your health triangle Friendships – significant relationships between two people that is based on trust, caring, and consideration Typically formed with people who have similar interests

Communication Cooperation – working together for the good of all Compromise – giving up something to reach solution that satisfies all Character and relationships Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship

Respecting Yourself & Others Having self-respect is an important foundation for developing/maintaining healthy relationships It makes you more likely to seek relationships with people who treat you with respect Knowing and understand your values makes it easier to strengthen your relationships People know what's important to you

Respecting Yourself & Others It's important to treat others with respect... Listening to what others have to say Being considerate of the feelings of others Developing mutual trust between people Being realistic in your expectations (you can't always be #1 in everyone's priority list)

Respecting Yourself & Others Prejudice – unfair opinion or judgement of a particular group of people Stereotype – exaggerated or oversimplified belief about people who belong to a certain group Tolerance – the ability to accept others' differences Bullying – deliberately harming or threatening other people who cannot easily defend themselves Hazing – making others perform certain tasks in order to join the group

Communicating Effectively There are three types of communication styles... Aggressive – being overly forceful, pushy, or hostile (may involve bullying)...no attention paid to belief of others Passive – unwilling to express thoughts and feelings in a direct or firm manner (dislike conflict) Assertive – expressing views clearly and respectfully (standing up for what you believe and being able to work things out with others)

Communicating Effectively To communicate effectively, you need to learn... Speaking skills – being able to say what you mean in a clear/respectful way Listening skills – paying close attention to what someone else is saying (“active” listening) Not interrupting, showing interest, restating what you hear, asking questions, and showing empathy Nonverbal communication – such as body language (gestures, facial expressions, etc.)

Questions for Thought… Healthy family relationships strengthen triangle? What are the three C's of healthy relationships? What are some reasons people bully others? What are some examples of body language? How might family influence your comm. Skills? What is the goal of constructive criticism?
