1 Chapter 2 Warm-Up Do you consider yourself a good communicator? List various methods of communication that you use on a daily basis.

2 Interpersonal Skills  Interpersonal Communication  Some effective communication skills for building and maintaining healthy relationships: Clearly say what you mean. Use “I” Messages. Pay attention to how you say something. Tone, Facial Expressions, and Gestures make a difference. Be a good listener. Avoid interrupting and show that you are paying attention.  Refusal Skills  Conflict Resolution

3 Self-Management Skills  Self-management involves taking responsibility for your health and acting in specific ways that promote your wellness. Practicing healthful behaviors and stress management are parts of Self- Management Skills

4 Analyzing Influences  Internal influences on your health include knowledge, values, likes, dislikes, and desires.  External influences on your health include your family, your friends and peers, your environment, your culture, laws and the media.  Becoming aware of these influences will help you to make healthful choices.

5 Accessing Information/Advocacy  To make healthful choices, you should identify and use reliable sources of health information. Some reliable sources might be parents, other trusted adults, library resources, and government agencies…not always the Internet!  Advocacy This skill helps you to positively influence the health of those around you.

6 The Decision-Making Process  Decision-making skills involve six basic steps: State the situation. List the options. Weigh the possible outcomes. Consider your values. Make a decision and act on it. Evaluate the decision.

7 Setting Personal Health Goals  Goals Short-Term Goals Examples?? Long-Term Goals Examples??  Action Plan includes several steps: Set a specific, realistic goal, and write it down. List the steps you will take to reach your goal. Identify your sources of help and support. Set a reasonable time frame for reaching your goal. Evaluate your progress by establishing checkpoints. Reward yourself for achieving your goal.

8 What is Good Character?  People with good character demonstrate core ethical values…What you do when no one is watching is part of your character!  Six primary traits of good character: Trustworthiness Respect Responsibility Fairness Caring Citizenship

9 Developing your Character  Steps to develop your own good character: Stand up for your beliefs. Learn from people who demonstrate good character traits. Join volunteer groups.  Look for positive role models! Who would you consider to be a good role model?
