2 Communication Skills Communication- the clear exchange of ideas and information Sending and receiving messages Helps people to understand each other

3 Ways to Communicate Language- a speaker or writer, listener or reader
Body Language- facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, and posture -Can sometimes send mixed messages -Other ways can include , text messages, or mail, sign language.

4 Advantages and Disadvantages
Face to Face Visual Clues Not as easy to express feelings Phone Immediate response No Visual Clues and Text Can think and make corrections Can communicate things to be remembered Can not see facial expressions or tone of voice

5 Communication Styles Aggressive- Using a threatening tone
Passive- Shy or meek Assertive- Not shy or hesitant about expressing yourself

6 Relationship A connection you have with another person
Good relationships make you feel loved, wanted, safe, and secure

7 Family The basic unit of society
It includes two or more people brought together by blood, marriage, adoption or desire for mutual support.

8 Types of Families Couple – A husband and a wife who do not have children Nuclear – Two parents and one or more children Extended – A nuclear family plus other relatives

9 Types of Families Single Parent – One parent and one or more children
Blended – Two people, one or both with children from previous marriages Foster – Adults caring for one or more children born to other parents

10 Types of Families Adoptive – A couple plus one or more adopted children Joint-Custody – Two parents living apart, sharing custody of their children Single-Custody – Two parents living apart and one or more children living with only one parent

11 Responsibilities in the Family
Parents Children Meet basic need of family Teach and practice good habits Model good communication and health skills Encourage young to practice skills Share household chores Show appreciation Help other family members

12 Family Changes Changes can include: Job promotion Graduation
Family illness Loss of a job Separation Divorce Death

13 Serious Family Problems
Abuse - A pattern of mistreatment of another person Physical Abuse – Involves physical force Emotional Abuse – Made to feel worthless and angry

Sexual Abuse – Mistreatment involving sexual activity Neglect – the failure of parents to provide their children with physical and emotional care and protection

15 Friends and Peers Friendships- Special type of relationship between people who enjoy being together Factors for friendships Same neighborhood School Interests Values Hobbies Activities

16 Traits of Good Friends Reliable – Dependable Loyal – Faithful
Empathy – The ability to identify and share another person’s feelings. Supportive and respectful Accepts views and opinions Cooperation- Work together for common good

Peer Pressure – Influence that people your age may have on you

18 Types of Peer Pressure Positive Inspire to improve
Do something worthwhile Join clubs or teams Improve health Study

19 Types of Peer Pressure Negative Encouraging to:
Do something illegal or dangerous Tobacco, alcohol, or drugs Be unkind to someone who is different Be disrespectful to parents or adults Fight or join gangs

20 Conflicts Disagreements in ideas, beliefs, or interests Caused by:
Difference of opinion Jealousy Prejudice- opinion or fear formed without having facts or firsthand knowledge

I feel like your leaving me out Not “You are ignoring me” Tolerance- ability to accept other people as they are

22 Resolving Conflicts Walk away Refuse to fight Do not take sides
Get help from adults Compromise – A skill in which each side gives up something in order to reach and agreeable solution
