2 OBJECTIVES n DEFINE AND BUILD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS. n EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION. n GIVE EXAMPLES OF BOTH VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

3 Journal Entry #1 n What are the different ways of communication? Give as many examples as you can, for how people communicate everyday.

6 What is Communication? n Communication-the exchange of information through the use of words or actions. n Every communication needs 3 parts: –Sender –Receiver –Message

7 WHISPER DOWN THE LANE! n AS A CLASS WERE WE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY?

8 2 Types of Communication n Verbal Communication: Expressing feelings, thoughts, or experiences with words, either by speaking or writing. n Nonverbal Communication: getting messages across without using words. Using body language such as postures, gestures, and facial expressions.

9 Speaking Skills n Think before you speak n Use “I” messages n Avoid being rude or insulting n Make clear, simple statements, and be specific

10 Listening Skills n Use body language to show your listening n Take advantage of pauses n Do not interrupt n Mirror what you hear

17 What are differences between friendship and acquaintances? n FRIENDSHIP- a relationship with someone you know, trust and regard with affection n ACQUAINTANCE – someone you see occasionally or know casually

19 What is Compromise? n When both sides in a conflict agree to give up something in order to reach a solution that satisfies everyone.

20 Peer Pressure- the influence that your peer group has on you. n Negative Peer Pressure n H.E.L.P.= Healthful, Ethical, Legal, Parent Approved n Positive Peer Pressure

21 JOURNAL #5 Two friends are planning to go to the movies. One wants to see an action movie; the other wants to see a rated r comedy. How can you compromise? Why is compromise an important part of friendship and how can it stop you from giving in to negative peer pressure?.

22 Creating a Skit On Peer Pressure n Form Groups of 3-4 people n Choose a Scenario for your skit dealing with peer pressure n Write a script for you to act out and perform for the class n Practice your scenario n Perform you scenario for you class n Answer questions on the different types of peer pressure
