2 Communication Styles There are 3 types of communication styles
Aggressive- Overly forceful, pushy or hostile. Bullying, intimidation, doesn’t care about others thoughts feelings or needs Communication Styles

3 Passive- Unwilling or unable to express thought and feelings in a direct or firm manner
Putting others needs ahead of your own, dislike conflict, try to avoid it at all cost Assertive- Expressing your views clearly and respectfully Standing up for your rights, and respecting those of others Improve your relationship with others Communication Styles

4 Ways To Communicate Speaking Skills
Good communication is to say what you mean People hurt your feelings People can’t read your mind, or pick up on subtle hints Be as clear as you can be, but don’t be DISRESPECTFUL Ways To Communicate

5 I Messages- a statement that focuses on your feelings rather than on someone else’s behavior
Helps communicate feelings in a positive way Example- “I really don’t like to be left waiting, it makes me feel like you don’t think I’m important”

6 “You” Messages “I” Messages Why can’t you ever show up on time I really don’t like to be left waiting, it makes me feel like you don’t think I’m important You never listen to anything I say I feel like my suggestions aren’t being taken seriously I said I’d take out the trash and I will you don’t have to nag me about it every 5 min I am feeling stressed because I have a big project due tomorrow. I’ll take out the trash as soon as I finish working on this You’re always taking my CD’s without asking It bothers me when I get home and find all my CD’s in your room You always ignore me when your other friends are around I feel hurt when I’m left out of a conversation

7 Active Listening- Paying close attention to what someone is saying and communicating
Don’t interrupt Show interest Restate what you hear Ask questions Show empathy Listening Skills

8 Nonverbal Communication
Sometimes what you say isn’t as important as how you say it “Nice Outfit” -Voice is a nonverbal communication Body Language- Nonverbal communication through gestures, facial expressions, behaviors and posture Nodding to turning away Nonverbal Communication

9 Offering Useful Feedback
Offering constructive feedback can improve your relationships with others Constructive criticism to bring positive change Use I statements Non-hostile comments Encourage improvements Letting people know how their positive and negative actions make you feel Let people know you value them Offering Useful Feedback
