4  Interpersonal communication  When talking to communicating with someone else, what is something they could do to frustrate you? ◦ Clearly say what you mean  Use “I” message to state your position ◦ Pay attention to how you say something  Use a respectful tone. Be aware of facial expressions & gestures. ◦ Be a good listener  Avoid interrupting the speaker & show you are listening by nodding or asking appropriate questions.

5  What would you say if your friend asked you to drink laundry detergent?  Refusal skills ◦ Say no in a firm voice  “I’d rather not” ◦ Explain why ◦ Suggest alternatives ◦ Use appropriate body language ◦ Leave if necessary

6  In your notes, write the name of the person or persons you find yourself in a conflict with the most. Write about a specific time when you and that person(s) where in a conflict. What caused the conflict? Was the conflict resolved? If it was, why was it resolved? If it was not, why do you think it wasn’t resolved?  Conflict resolution skills ◦ Respect other’s rights and your own ◦ Willingness to compromise ◦ Take time to calm down and think through the situation. ◦ When discussing the conflict, speak calmly and listen attentively, asking questions when appropriate. ◦ Use a polite tone and try to brainstorm solutions where no one loses respect. Work to resolve conflict peacefully.

9  Steps of the decision-making process ◦ State the situation  What decisions need to be made? ◦ List the options  What are the possible choices? ◦ Weigh the possible outcomes  H.E.L.P.; healthful, ethical, legal, parent approval ◦ Consider values ◦ Make a decision and act on it ◦ Evaluate the decision  Reflect on what happened. What was the outcome? How did the decision affect your health and the health of others? What did you learn? Would you do it again?

10  Why may you want to ask someone older or with experience before you make a decision? ◦ Can provide valuable feedback. They may be able to better explain the positive and negative consequences. You will have a better understanding of what to expect.  Why may you want to ask a parent or family member specifically? ◦ Can strengthen family bonds and values. Will give you a sense of security that you will have the love and support of your family.  Why is it important for you personally to consider how your parents may feel when making a decision?

11  Short term vs. long term goals ◦ When setting a goal, must consider how long it will take to achieve goal. ◦ Short term  Finishing a project by Friday or cleaning room before dinner. ◦ Long term  Improve grades for semester, making varsity sports team, getting into college. ◦ Many times short term goals are steps in a plan to achieve a long-term goal.

12 1. What are the six steps of the decision- making process. 2. Summarize the advantages of seeking advice and feedback regarding decision- making skills. 3. Explain the difference between short-term and long-term goals, and provide an example of each.

13  In your notebook, you are going to create a web outlining what good character means to you. Your central theme will be the word “character”. Branching off from that will be words that describe good character. Branching off from those descriptive words will be ways you can personally show others or help yourself develop those specific traits.

15  Who are the role models in your life??? ◦ Family ◦ Friends ◦ Celebrities  What do they do that makes them a role model?

16  At home ◦ Trustworthiness & reliability at home when you carry out responsibilities, showing respect and caring in daily actions.  How would you feel if your parents didn’t follow through on their word?  At school ◦ Observing school rules you show respect to teachers and other students.  How would you feel if another student through trash at your feet in class or in the cafeteria?  In your community ◦ Obeying laws, respecting needs of others and being tolerant of differences.  How would you feel if someone stole something from you, or purposely caused damage to your property and was not punished?

17  What is character? How is good character related to values?  Name the six primary traits of good character.  List three way of demonstrating good character in your home, your school and your community?
