convey Communicate or make known

paraphase To restate in your own words

summarize To briefly restate the main idea of a piece

Words with similar meanings synonym Words with similar meanings

antonym Words with opposite meaning

sequence Noun – a particular order in which related events, movements, or things follow each other. Verb – arrange in a particular order

Cause and effect An action that makes something else happen

analyze Discover or reveal something through detailed examination

transitions Words or phrases that connect ideas, details, or events in writing

coherence Clear and orderly presentation of ideas in a paragraph or essay

genre A category or type of literature, such as short story, folktale, poem, novel, play, fiction…

Point of view Perspective from which a story is told First person-character is telling the story and the pronouns = I, Me … Third person-narrator outside of the story is telling the story and the pronouns = we, they, them …

diction Choice of words

narrative A story or a description of a series of events

characterization The methods a writer uses to develop characters; for example, through description, actions, and dialogue

setting The time and place in which a narrative occurs.

conflict A struggle between opposing forces

Internal conflict Struggle with self

External conflict Struggle with outside force Man vs. man Man vs. society Man vs. nature

Personal narrative Tells the true story of something that happened to you. Includes a response and reflection on the incident. (incident, response, reflection)

dialogue Conversation between characters

connotation The suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word. Beyond the literal definition “Yeah, right!” (means no)

denotation The dictionary definition The exact meaning of a word.

metaphor Hank has the heart of a lion. She is a shining star. To compare two unlike objects, ideas, thoughts, or feelings to provide a clearer description without using the words like or as. Hank has the heart of a lion. She is a shining star. That desk is a pigpen.

Sensory language Use of details from the five senses to add color and depth to writing. It helps readers visualize.

short story Work of fiction that presents a sequence of events, or plot that deals with a conflict It is shorter in length than a novel and can be read in one sitting.

Theme The central idea, or message, or purpose of a literary work. This is not one word. The theme needs to be written as a statement.

plot The sequence of related events that make up a story.

Figurative language Language that is not meant to be interpreted literally.
