MENTAL ILLNESS STATISTICS (US ONLY) Schizophrenia – 2.2 million (82,000 in Ga) Bipolar Disorder – 5.5 million (163,000 in Ga) OCD – 3.3 million

SCHIZOPHRENIA Brain disorder in which the pt. interprets reality abnormally Combo of hallucinations, delusions, & extreme disordered thinking/behavior

CAUSES Genetics Problems with brain chemicals (Dopamine, Glutamate)

S&S Men = start early 20s / Women = late 20s Delusions Hallucinations Disorganized thinking Negative symptoms – lack of emotion, monotone, poor hygiene

BIPOLAR DISORDER (MANIC DEPRESSION) Causes extreme mood swings (emotional highs & lows) Mood swings can occur several times a week/month Unknown cause Symptoms can begin during adolescence or early adulthood

S&S MANIC Inflated self-esteem Decrease need for sleep Racing thoughts Highly distracted Unusual talkativeness Unrestrained activities DEPRESSION Sad, empty, hopeless (most of the day) Reduce interest Increase wt. loss Excessive sleep Lack of concentration

OCD (OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER) Unreasonable thoughts & fears (obsessions) Lead to repetitive behavior Often center around a theme (germs, order, counting, harm) Dx is often during late adolescence

S&S OBSESSION Fear of being contaminated by shaking hands or by touching objects others have touched Doubts that you've locked the door or turned off the stove Intense stress when objects aren't orderly or facing a certain way Images of hurting yourself or someone else Thoughts about acting inappropriately Avoidance of situations that can trigger obsessions, such as shaking hands COMPULSION Hand-washing until your skin becomes raw Checking doors repeatedly to make sure they're locked Checking the stove repeatedly to make sure it's off Counting in certain patterns Silently repeating a word or phrase
