Outline Materials to bring everyday Organizing your Math Binder Your typical day Summaries Assessments Partner Quizzes Homework General information Absent/Incomplete work The Strike System Class Contest Helpful reminders Hashtags for Success

Materials to Bring Everyday ≤1.5-inch binder for MATH ONLY! Dividers – you’ll need 5 sections labeled: – Investigation 1 – Investigation 2 – Investigation 3 – Investigation 4 – Investigation 5 Lined paper (reinforced preferred) A lot of pencils Highlighters for note-taking Your book which will be kept in your binder rings Materials for Home: calculator, protractor, ruler, pencils

Organizing your Math Binder Packets will be handed out by Investigation Each section of your binder will be for each Investigation Order your notes: – Launch & Explore, Summary, Homework The check-up/quiz for each Investigation will go at the end of each section of your binder After each book test, take out all the papers from that book and leave them at home – start with an empty binder with just lined paper for the new book

Your Typical Day Take out homework and be prepared to ask any questions. Write down the homework for the day Check SmartBoard for a WOD (aka Do NOW) to be completed independently or with your group Read the “Launch” as a class Complete the “Explore” section – Teacher-led group collaboration and discussion, including mini-lesson – If your group finishes early, ask the teacher for the next assignment Finish with a “Summary” Finish & Check your Summary at home Launch, Explore, and Summary are your Notes/Reference Materials

Summaries Wrap-up of key points covered in each lesson It is the responsibility of the student to complete the summaries on their own, and to check answers online Be sure to ask questions during the next class if you cannot complete a summary or do not understand a specific concept On some occasions, summaries may be completed in class

Assessments Tests (at the end of each book) – usually around 40 points Quizzes (Individual or Partner) (at the end of each Investigation(s)) – usually around 20 points Check-ups (at the end of each Investigation) – usually around 10 points Homework Quizzes (an unannounced collection of a homework assignment) – usually around 10 points

Partner Quizzes Students will have the option to take the quiz independently or with a partner You will be paired up with a student who is at a similar ability level as you You will have a different partner each time, but there may be instances when you have the same partner multiple times Both students complete the quiz, but only one of them is graded. Both students receive that same grade.

Homework Homework (0 to 2 points) – answers for each Investigation will be posted online – It is your responsibility to check your homework in another color (pen or marker) and prepare questions 2 points – you completed the entire assignment WITH work and checked 1 point – you completed part of the assignment and checked 0 points – you did not complete the assignment – you completed the assignment but showed no work – you did not check your answers & prepare questions

Homework Format

General Information Bathroom policy: – One boy, one girl at a time – Sign out/in when you leave/return No pens on check-ups, quizzes, or tests or you will lose 2% off your grade. 8:00PM cutoff for s You need a pass to come in for extra help

If you are absent… If you are absent you have 2 days for each day absent to make up any missed homework. It is your responsibility to see me for any materials that were handed out while you were absent. YOU are responsible for showing me the makeup work that you completed. Otherwise it will be a 0.

If you did not do your homework… If you did not complete your homework, you will receive a 0 but you will be allowed one extra day to complete the assignment for half credit.

Extra Help Extra help will be offered EVERY morning starting at 7:30 am. Students are responsible for obtaining a pass from me. Please make sure that you come with questions already prepared. Have questions written down or circled from the homework. Doing this makes it easier for me to help you, and allows me to help other students that also come in early for help.

The Strike System Everyone starts each marking period with 20/20 already! (basically a quiz grade) Any time there is inappropriate behavior, you will get a strike and lose 1 point from the 20 Examples of inappropriate behavior: – shouting out answers – yelling out things that are irrelevant to the lesson – being disrespectful to another student or adult – coming late to class – talking while the teacher is talking or during a quiz/test – Leaving materials on your desk when class has been dismissed (group loses points) – Not signing out when leaving classroom to use bathroom – any other type of behavior that is not appropriate for the classroom

Consequences Warning Conference between the student & teacher Parent is contacted Detention Referral to administration

Class Contest The Pre-Algebra classes battle against each other, and the Honors Pre-Algebra classes battle against each other. The class with the highest mean on each assessment earns a star. The class with the most stars at the end of the marking period receives 5 points on their numerator towards their final marking period grade.

Helpful Reminders DO NOT enter the classroom if a teacher is not present. DO NOT leave any supplies or materials in the classroom. Stapler, tape, hole puncher, and sharpener are located in the counter. They are to NEVER leave the classroom. At the end of class, throw away any paper or garbage even if it is not yours! At the end of class, return any materials that were used (ruler, protractor, calculator, etc). back to the black case even if it is not yours!
