Hearst Elementary School The best little school in the District! School Year Dr. Deborah Bergeron, Principal

Welcome to School Year! Last Year: Good to Gooder This Year: Gooder to Great!

Let’s Celebrate! We Rocked The CAS! Overall Math Increase – 6.7% Overall Reading Increase – 7.6% FARMS Reading Increase – 21% 76 of our Math/Reading (3 rd -5 th ) scores increased at least one level Many students moved from Basic to Advanced and Basic to Proficient in Reading and Math Index Score = 72 (Rising) – Need 80 to be Reward School – highest level!

How can you help us get to GREAT? Support your teachers. Support their academic initiatives. Support their classroom management processes. Communicate! Communicate! Communicate! Make sure we have a good in our system! Support your student(s). READ! READ! READ! Limit weekday television. Complete homework EVERY NIGHT – SAME TIME – SAME PLACE! Be on time to school, well rested and prepared. Be your child’s advocate. If they are not on grade level (or passed CAS) make some noise! Support your school community. Join PTA. Pay PTA enrichment fee. Volunteer – every minute counts!

High Trust & Responsive Classroom We teach kids to think and be responsible. We use language that is specific to allowing students to think and be responsible. We create “standards” not expectations. We give kids permission to do what we want them to do. We do not punish; we do not reward and we do not “let it slide”. We explicitly teach everything we want our kids to do. And, then we practice – A LOT! We LOVE mistakes – Mistakes are where the new learning goes!

The Hearst Owl Pledge I am a Hearst Owl, And today I pledge to practice O wnership fello W ship L eadership S cholarship Hoot!

How can you help promote successful behavior? Encourage the language you are starting hear and use it yourself! “I need support?” “For more success you may….” Use the “teach” method to get results. “For more/absolute respect, you may/can….” Model behavior you want from your children both subtly and overtly. Remember – Mistakes are where the new learning goes! Support teachers and the school in taking time to teach kids to think and be responsible. (Instead of punishments and rewards.)

Important Policy Highlights Lost and Found will be out at each PTA meeting and donated the day after. Lunch – do a lunch test! If you child cannot open it, please don’t send it in.
