Welcome to Ms. Haynes ’ Kindergarten Seashore 2015-2016 Boston Elementary A B C D

* Attendance is crucial to success in Kindergarten. As you will see our daily learning would be hard to duplicate outside of the classroom. However, if your child is sick, please DO NOT send them to school to share their germs. You will need to send me a note upon their return to school for it to be considered “excused”.

* 7:30-7:45 * Students should be in the classroom by 7:45 or they will be marked tardy. When students get to school, they will have morning work at their seat which is a review of previously taught concepts. At 7:45 we watch the morning announcements on the BNN. *

* In our classroom, I use a total approach to reading. Reading in our classroom will be taught through center rotations. The groups are flexible and students may be changed from one group to another depending on level. The study of Phonics will be taught using Wilson Fundations. This is an excellent program that builds.

* During this part of the day, we will focus on the subjects of Science or Social Studies. I usually base the theme of the week from one of these two subjects.

* We plan to use 28 weekly readers through out the year help bring in ss/science content. * $6.00 will cover the cost for the entire year for your student!

* I would love to see you come to school and eat lunch with your child. * If you do choose to eat with your child, you will need to eat with your child at the tables on the stage. Your child may not bring classmates to join you. * Also, children may start purchasing ice cream on Fridays in September.

* This is one of the most important parts of our school day. Wilson Fundations is the program in which your child will be learning letters, sounds, and more! * We will be practicing our phonics skills everyday through written activities, craft projects, and centers. This part of the day is so important because this is what will help your child learn to read.

* Specials is a wonderful time each day that the students get to participate in Art, Music, or PE. At the beginning of the month, a specials calendar will be placed in your child’s agenda for reference. * Please remember that on PE days, students will need to wear tennis shoes.

* Each day we practice our calendar skills. This is a time where we practice both Language Arts and Math skills. Each child has their own “Calendar Journal” where they follow along with me while tracking their own data.

* Recess is an important part of our day as well. Not only because the children are playing but more importantly, what they are learning from playing with each other. Social lessons taught through play are very valuable to the development of the whole child.

* This time of the day is an extension of our Calendar Time. These are some of the specific math units we will focus on this year! 14 * During this time of the day, students will be packing up and getting ready to go home for the day. Afternoon announcements are given and the students are walked to bus duty. Following the dismissal of buses, car riders and ASP students will arrive at their staging areas.

* Yes, in Kindergarten students will have nightly homework. Homework should strictly be a review of previously taught material. You may need to help your child, however, resist the urge to do their homework for them. It is completely okay if they do not get everything correct!

Performance Standards www.cherokee.k12.ga.us Kindergarten Assessment GKIDS – a formal assessment used to notate your child’s progress on the state standards

* In our classroom, I use “Beach Ball Behavior”. Your child has their own special beach ball bucket. Your child will earn a beach ball for being a “bucket filler” (good behavior) and lose one for being a “bucket dipper”(poor behavior). On Fridays, the boy and girl who have collected the most beach balls earns a PRIZE from the treasure box. * To keep YOU in the loop of how your student is doing, there is a color chart in your student’s communication folder. Green is awesome, yellow is poor, and red is not good. Yellow and Red will be accompanied with a comment/note in the teacher portion of the agenda. * Every student begins their day on GREEN.

* I like to reward the children for the great choices that they have made all week. If your child gets no more than two yellows in a week, they will receive fun Friday. I believe that the children will make mistakes and this is a great way to keep them motivated for the week.

* By now I am sure that you are all aware and familiar with your child’s ANCHOR folder. This is an important tool that I use to communicate to you about your child’s behavior and work. Please make sure that you are checking and filling in the agenda daily. Ms. McMichen is wonderful about making any notes about changes.

* We will have at least one field trip this year. Plans are still being made as to the specifics of where the field trip will take place. As soon as more plans and details are made I will be sending home information.

* I welcome volunteers in the classroom. There are many jobs that you can do to help out. Some of these opportunities are running a reading center, coming in for special celebrations, being a Mystery Reader, and many more!

Remind 101 is a no-reply texting system that we’re asking parents to subscribe to in order to receive messages directly from the principal. Please subscribe today. Send a text to the number: 81010 Message is: @3e705

We will have one fall and one spring conference. I will use a website called sign-up genius for you to use to sign up for a day/time!

for taking the time to attend Curriculum Night ! I look forward to working with you and your child this year. It is going to be a wonderful year filled with exciting, learning activities !
