FAST FACTS AMONG YOUTH LIVING WITH HIV INFECTION IN 2010, CDC ESTIMATES THAT ALMOST 60% HAD UNDIAGNOSED INFECTIONS AND WERE UNAWARE THEY WERE HIV INFECTED. 57% OF THE INFECTIONS WERE AMONG YOUNG AFRICAN AMERICANS, AND 75% OF YOUNG MEN WHO HAVE HAD SEX WITH OTHER MEN. MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 2

WHAT IS HIV? HIV DESTROYS A TYPE OF DEFENSE CELL IN THE BODY CALLED CD4 HELPER LYMPHOCYTE. THE HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV) IS ONE OF THE MOST SERIOUS, DEADLY DISEASES IN HUMAN HISTORY. HIV CAUSES A CONDITION CALLED ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME BETTER KNOWN AS AIDS. MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 3

LYMPHOCYTES LYMPHOCYTES ARE PART OF YOUR BODY’S IMMUNE SYSTEM THAT FIGHTS INFECTIONS. HIV DESTROYS THESE CELLS, AND YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM BECOMES WEAK, AND YOU ARE ABLE TO GET SERIOUS INFECTIONS YOU NORMALLY WOULDN’T. MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 4

TRANSMISSION UNLESS THE PERSON HAS LARGE OPEN SORES IN THEIR MOUTHS YOU CANNOT GET HIV FROM MOUTH-TO-MOUTH KISSING. IT IS TRANSMITTED THROUGH SEXUAL CONTACT OR INJECTION DRUG EQUIPMENT, SUCH AS NEEDLES FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS HIV. ONLY CERTAIN LIQUIDS SUCH AS BLOOD, SEMEN, BREAST MILK, AND VAGINAL FLUIDS MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 5

PREVENTIONS USE A NEW CONDOM EVERY TIME YOU HAVE SEX TELL YOUR SEXUAL PARTNERS IF YOU HAVE HIV USE A CLEAN NEEDLE IF YOU’RE PREGNANT GET MEDICAL CARE RIGHT AWAY CONSIDER THE DRUG TRUVADA CONSIDER MALE CIRCUMCISION GET TESTED AND KNOW YOUR PARTNERS STATUS MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 6

ONE STORY OF MANY WHO HAS AIDS… MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 7 An African American woman is now 22, diagnosed with AIDS. She was young and dumb. She started having sex at 15 with a senior she liked, and thought loved her. He later on found someone in college, and lost interest in the young girl. Later on that school year they were asked to donate blood, and she did. Someone left a note on her door saying they needed to talk to her, so she met up with them. They told her they had found HIV antibodies in her blood and that she needed to be tested. She was diagnosed at the age of 17 with HIV which has now become AIDS.

MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 8

CONCLUSION DON’T BE YOUNG AND DUMB HAVE PROTECTED SEX, WEAR CONDOMS BE SMART ABOUT YOUR DECISIONS/ SEX PARTNERS GET TESTED AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN SEXUALLY ACTIVE IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON’T HAVE A LOT OF SEX PARTNERS, OR EVEN SEX AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE. HOPEFULLY THIS PRESENTATION INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE BETTER CHOICES IF YOU ALREADY HAVEN’T, AND TO BE AWARE OF YOUR PARTNERS. MORGAN ZINNERMAN & ANILYAH MAULL 9
