4 The Difference Between: HIV and AIDS
AIDS is a condition that is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) The HIV virus attacks the immune system Special white blood cells, called T-cells, fight germs to keep us healthy HIV attacks and destroys T-cells making the immune system weak A person with AIDS is someone whose immune system has been severely damaged by HIV There is no cure for HIV or AIDS

5 HIV Transmission HIV is not transmitted through casual contact such as hugging, touching, swimming, sharing food, playing together etc. HIV is only transmitted by the exchange of four body fluids: Blood Semen Vaginal secretions Breast milk

6 HIV Transmission Continued
Exposure to infected body fluid can occur with: Unprotected anal, oral or vaginal sex Sharing needles or syringes for drug use Pregnancy, childbirth or breast-feeding Since 1985, donated blood has been tested before use by hospitals

8 Video: Kids Next Door You will view a 15 minute video describing 5 kids who have HIV or AIDS. While viewing, think about the following questions: What goals did the kids have? What activities did they like to do? What facts did the kids want people to know? How did the kids want to be treated?

9 Summary Remember: HIV is transmitted through unprotected sex with an infected partner, sharing needles, or during pregnancy, childbirth or breast-feeding. ABSTINENCE provides 100% protection You can use refusal skills to avoid risky behavior “it is not who you are, but what you do” that puts you at risk for infection
