HIV/AIDS FRAME What is HIV? What is AIDS? How do people get infected? How don’t people get infected? How do people prevent HIV infection?

HIV/AIDS Knowledge Survey 1. AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. 2.AIDS is caused by a virus known as HIV. 3. Only Homosexual (“gay”) men can be infected with HIV. 4. You can always tell when a person is infected with HIV. 5. If someone infected with HIV uses injection drugs or shares needles and syringes with others, he/she can spread the virus that causes AIDS. 6. Having more than one sex partner will increase your chances of getting infected with HIV. 7. You can get HIV from public toilets, drinking fountains, silverware, and public telephones. 8. There is a test that tells you if you are infected with HIV.

HIV/AIDS Knowledge Survey continue… 9. You can help protect yourself from HIV infection by using a latex condom. 10.If you have HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) but don’t know it, you can still give it to someone else. 11.Almost 49 percent of all people who have AIDS are African American. 12.There is a medicine to protect people from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. 13.You can become infected with the virus that causes AIDS by sitting next to someone who is infected with HIV, or by touching and hugging someone who is HIV-infected 14. Pregnant women who are infected with HIV can pass the virus to their unborn babies. 15. If two uninfected people are faithful to each other for a long time and don’t have sex with others or share needles or “works” with others, they are not likely to become exposed to HIV.

KEY POINTS HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS is a result of HIV infection. HIV infection can be prevented. HIV is not spread through everyday casual contact. People cannot get HIV when they give blood.

HIV INFFECTION People infected with HIV May look and feel healthy for a long time. Can infect others even if they don’t look or feel sick. May have symptoms that are like those of many other illnesses. When people develop AIDS, they may get illnesses that healthy people usually don’t get. Only a test can show if someone is infected with HIV. Only a doctor can diagnose AIDS.

How HIV is not spread HIV is not spread through everyday casual contact.

How HIV is Spread HIV is spread By having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person. By sharing needles or syringes with an infected person. During pregnancy, birth, or breast feeding from an infected mother to her baby. Body fluids of an infected person that spread HIV: SemenVaginal fluid BloodBreast milk

It’s Not Who We Are, But What We Do That Puts Us At Risk For HIV

Stopping the Spread of HIV People can choose ways to be affectionate that do not spread HIV and other STDs. Respect each other. Have fun together.

Stopping the Spread of HIV If people have sex, using latex condoms the right way every time greatly reduces the risk of HIV infection and other STDs.

Stopping the Spread of HIV If people inject non-prescribed drugs (like heroin, cocaine, or amphetamines), they can prevent HIV infection by Using new, sterile equipment every time Never sharing needles or syringes The most effective way to prevent HIV infection through injection-drug use is to get into treatment and to stop injecting drugs. When more effective prevention is not possible, clean drug equipment with bleach. Dispose of needles safely. Remember, drugs or alcohol can impair judgment.

HIV Testing People who think they are at risk of HIV are encouraged to seek individual counseling and testing. Do not donate blood to get tested for HIV.

Blood Supply The risk of getting HIV from a blood transfusion in the U.S. is extremely low. All blood donors are screened for their risk of HIV. All donated blood is tested. All blood that tests positive for signs of HIV is destroyed.
