2. What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases?
Spread when pathogens from an infected
person enters another person.
Abstinence is the only 100% way to prevent STDs.
Examples: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis.

3. What Does HIV Stand For?
H - uman
I - mmunodeficiency
V - irus

4. What are the 4 fluids HIV is Found In?
Blood
Semen (from a man)
Vaginal Fluid (from a woman)
Breast Milk

5. What Cell Does HIV Infect????
Helper T Cells

6. HIV and AIDS
Helper T Cells- White Blood cells that identify pathogens, sound the alarm and start the production of antibodies to protect the body.
As more T cells are destroyed, the immune system weakens and the person gets sick more often.
Opportunistic Infection – pathogens take advantage of the weak immune system
Specific type of pneumonia and cancer

7. HIV and AIDS
The virus, HIV, will lead to the condition known as AIDS a breakdown of the body’s ability to fight infection.
Acquired – have to do something to get it
Immune – destroys your immune system
Deficiency – lacking your immune system
Syndrome – continues on, does not end

When you have less than 200 T cells you get the diagnosis of AIDS
Average person typically has between T cells/ mm3
Most people are above 700

9. HIV Infection and Treatment
Victims my have no signs or symptoms for many years.
Some have flu like symptoms within a few weeks of being infected.
They can spread the disease during this time and not know it.
HIV cannot be cured, but people are living 25+ years after being infected.
Some medications can slow how fast the
virus multiplies.

10. How HIV is Spread
During close intimate relations
Sharing a needle (drug, tattoo etc.)
Infected blood
All donated blood is tested before it is used
Mother to child (breast milk)
HIV is found in saliva and tears but there
has NEVER been a case spread this way.

Hugging or shaking hands (casual contact)
Touching objects (pencils, books etc)
Using public bathrooms.
Kissing
Donating blood
Breathing the air of an infected person.
Insect bites

12. Protection from HIV and STD’s
PRACTICE ABSTINENCE
Discuss piercings with a parent
Only get a tattoo from reputable store
Know blood transfusions in the US are screened
Do not drink alcohol or use drugs

13. Universal Precautions- Steps to take to avoid
contact with pathogens in body fluids.
Wear disposable gloves and throw away when done
Wash your hands with soap and water after
Wear a face mask or shield if you give first aid for breathing
Do not use more than once without sterilizing
Cover cuts or scrapes with a sterile dressing
Do not eat or drink anything when giving first aid
Do not touch your eyes nose or mouth when performing
first aid.
