Lesson 3 PCH 9.PCH.1 Analyze wellness, disease prevention, and recognition of symptoms 9.PCH1.3 Explain the procedures for health screenings, check ups, and other early detection measures in terms of their health-related benefits

Statement of Objectives In healthful living education, we have studied various health risks. Usually we focus on the primary prevention of risks. That is, what we do in the first place to keep from becoming ill or injured. Secondary control is early detection and that practice will be the basis of today’s lesson. By the end of the class, we will know the importance of medical examinations and self-examination to detect conditions early and improve effectiveness of intervention.

Review How many of you have heard about someone who “waited too late” to go to the doctor? What do you think that means? With which diseases could someone wait too long and not get the care needed to save their lives?

3 Levels of Disease and Injury Control Page 8: Write Definitions: Primary Prevention: eating nutritiously, exercising regularly, and avoiding harmful substances, such as tobacco. Secondary control- early detection methods, such as medical exams and self-examinations Tertiary- treatment level

Matching Different Practices We will see if we can distinguish between practices that are primary prevention, early detection and treatment(tertiary). On Page 8 (Levels of Prevention), add a chart, similar to no risk, possible risk, and high risk, with three columns Label the three columns: Primary Prevention Early detection Treatment (Tertiary)

Matching Exercising 2-3 times a week Applying a cast to a broken bone Chemotherapy Having a cancerous tumor removed Getting a physical examination Eating breakfast Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night Having a chest X-Ray Having blood cholesterol level checked Applying a cast to a broken bone Applying direct pressure for bleeding CPR Noticing one of the 7 warning signs of cancer Using sunscreen
