Non Communicable Disease- A disease that cannot be spread from one person to another. Result from conditions within the body: Improperly formed cells Deterioration of the body’s organs Reduced blood flow Malfunctions in a body system

Heredity Certain diseases are passed from parents to children. (heart disease, diabetes) Birth Defects Down Syndrome Behavior Alcohol abuse, tobacco, illegal drug use, inactivity, high fat diets Environment Ultra violet rays, second hand smoke, stress,

4 Cancer Cancer is a group of diseases in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in tissues and organs of the body. Tumor- an abnormal mass of tissue Benign means not cancerous Malignant means cancerous

5 Prevention and Treatment
Well Balanced Diet Sunblock, hats, protective clothing NO TANNING BOOTHS Exercise! Avoid alcohol and tobacco

6 Treatment Treatments will vary case by case, but the following are generally used: Chemotherapy The use of chemicals to treat cancer. The chemicals travel all over the body to fight the cells. Radiation Therapy Destroys specific cells within the body. Shrinks tumors using radiation Hormone Therapy Biological Therapy Boosts immune system by introducing new antibodies.

7 CAUTION- an easy way to remember warning signs
C- Change in bowel or bladder habits. A- A sore that doesn’t heal. U- Unusual discharge from reproductive organs T- Thickening lump in breast or testes. I- Indigestion or difficulty swallowing. O- Obvious changes in warts or moles N- Nagging cough or hoarseness that lingers for 4 to 6 weeks.

8 Cardiovascular Disease
Refers to a group of diseases of the heart and blood vessels

9 Cardiovascular Disease
Hypertension- high blood pressure. Arteriosclerosis- the hardening and thickening of arteries

10 Cardiovascular Disease
Stroke A condition caused by a blocked or broken blood vessel in the brain. Could result in death of brain cells and impaired functioning in the brain.

11 Cardiovascular Disease
Heart Attack The death of part of the heart muscle caused by a lack of blood flow to the heart.

12 Other Diseases and Conditions
Diabetes- a disease in which the body produces little or no insulin or cannot use insulin. Type 1 Diagnosed in childhood. Receive daily shots of insulin. Only 5-10% of all cases are type 1 Type 2 The body does not respond well to insulin. The pancreas cannot make enough insulin to keep glucose levels normal. Linked to age, obesity, and inactivity.
