4 Heart Disease Cardiovascular Disease- any condition that reduces the strength or function of the heart and blood vessels High Blood Pressure (hypertension) Hardening of the arteries 13 million people in the United States have heart disease Half a million people a year die from this condition Heart disease leads to 38% of all deaths in the US

5 What causes heart disease?
Heredity- runs in the family Lifestyle choices Smoking Little Exercise Have unhealthy eating habits

6 2 Types of Heart Disease Arteriosclerosis- a group of disorders that cause a thickening and hardening of the arteries Atherosclerosis- a form of arteriosclerosis, a condition that occurs when fatty substances build up on the inner lining of arties.

7 What causes a heart attack?
The heart does not get enough oxygen. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart slows or stops and the heart muscle is damaged. Do we want our heart to beat fast at rest or slow at rest? Adults heart beats 70 times per minute Our heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood each day.

8 Other major health problems
Hypertension- a disease in which the pressure of the blood on the walls of the blood vessels stay at a level that is higher than normal. Stroke- a serious condition that occurs when an artery of the brain breaks or becomes blocked.

9 How do we prevent heart disease
Eat healthy Limit our cholesterol, trans fat and saturated fats Be active Maintain a healthy weight Manage stress DO NOT SMOKE OR DRINK

11 Cancer Cancer- a disease that occurs when abnormal cells multiply out of control Tumor- a group of abnormal cells, which form a mass Two Types- Benign not cancerous Malignant - are cancerous

12 How can we reduce our risk for cancer?
Eat Healthy Limit Sun Exposure- Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 Perform self examinations

Change in bowel or bladder habits A sore that does not heal Unusual bleeding or discharge Thickening or lump in a breast or elsewhere Indigestion or difficulty swallowing Obvious change in a wart or mole Nagging cough or hoarseness

15 Treatments Biopsy the removal of a sample of tissue from a person for examination Radiation therapy uses X-rays or other forms of radiation to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy the use of a powerful medicines to destroy cancer cells
