8 What Is Cancer? When abnormal cells survive the body’s immune system, they divide and may form a tumor. tumor A mass of abnormal cells Most of the 50 trillion cells in the adult human body are normal. Some cells are abnormal and are usually destroyed by the immune system. When the abnormal cells survive, however, they begin to divide.

9 Tumors can be benign or malignant.

Types of Cancer Skin Cancer Breast Cancer Reproductive Organ Cancer Lung Cancer Colon and Rectal Cancer Leukemia Lymphoma Cancer can develop in many parts of the body. If discovered early, some kinds of cancer can be successfully treated. Skin cancer: The most common kind of cancer. Excessive exposure to direct sunlight is the major cause of skin cancer. Breast cancer: Most often occurs in women over 50. Can occur in younger women and occasionally men. Reproductive organ cancer: Can occur in the testicles and prostate gland in men. Can occur in the ovaries, cervix, and uterus in women. Lung cancer: The leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for both males and females. Colon and rectal cancer: Develops in the digestive tract. Early detection and better screening have greatly reduced the number of cases of colon and rectal cancers. Leukemia: A cancer of the white blood cells that starts in the bone marrow. An increase in cancerous white blood cells interferes with the healthy white blood cells immune response. Lymphoma: A cancer that starts in the lymphatic system. Lymphoma weakens the immune system and makes the body more at risk for infections.

11 Risk Factors and Causes of Cancer
Heredity, age, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors are some of the risk factors that can increase a person’s risk of cancer. Someone whose diet is high in saturated fats and low in fiber is at an increased risk for colon and rectal cancer. risk factors Characteristics or behaviors that increase the likelihood of developing a medical disorder or disease

Some types of cancer are caused by exposure to carcinogens. carcinogens Substances that cause cancer Asbestos was used in construction and manufacturing until is was discovered to contain cancerous substances. 13 Diagnosing Cancer If a suspicious lump or formation is discovered beneath the skin, a biopsy is usually done on the tissue. biopsy The removal of a sample of tissue from a person for examination To diagnose cancer, a physician will examine tissue samples under a microscope to see if the cells are cancerous. If the cells are found to be cancerous, the patient will begin treatment. X-rays and scanning equipment may be used to detect abnormal cell formations.

14 The Warning Signs of Cancer
Diagnosing Cancer C A U T I O N Change in bowel or bladder habits A sore that does not heal Unusual bleeding or discharge Thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere Indigestion or difficulty swallowing Obvious change in mole or wart Nagging cough or hoarseness The Warning Signs of Cancer Change in bowel or bladder habits: Bleeding from the rectum is a warning sign of colorectal cancer. Reduced urine output could indicate prostate cancer. A sore throat that does not heal: A sore throat that does not heal or that bleeds easily may indicated skin cancer or oral cancer if the sore is in the mouth of on the tongue. Unusual bleeding or discharge: Unusual bleeding or discharge from the vagina may indicate uterine cancer. Blood in the urine could signal bladder or kidney cancer. Thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere: This may indicate nonmalignant disease or cancer. All lumps should be checked. Indigestion or difficulty swallowing: Indigestion or difficulty swallowing could be a sign of cancer of the esophagus or stomach. Obvious change in mole or wart: See the ABCDs of Melanoma on the next slide. Nagging cough or hoarseness: This may be a sign of lung cancer.

Treating Cancer The most common cancer treatments are: Surgery Radiation therapy Chemotherapy Surgery removes cancer cells from the body. It is used for treating breast, skin, lung, and colon cancer, among others. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays from radioactive substances to destroy or shrink the cancer cells. Chemotherapy is often used to fight cancers that have spread throughout the body, such as leukemia. All treatments have side effects. 19 Reducing the Risk of Cancer
Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Limit sun exposure. Tips for Reducing the Risk of Cancer Avoid tobacco and alcohol: Cigarette smoking is the single major cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Excessive alcohol use increases the risk of several types of cancer. Limit sun exposure: Protect yourself from UV rays by limiting your time in the sun. Apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 before you go outdoors. Wear a hat that shades your neck, your face, and the tops of your ears. Be physically active: Be moderately active for 60 minutes or more on most days. Perform self-examinations: Females should perform monthly breast exams. Males should perform a testicular self-exam once a month. Ask you health care provider for information on how to conduct self-exam tests. If you notice any changes in moles or other skin growths, see a health care provider right away. Be physically active. Perform self- examinations.
