THE ENLIGHTENMENT

Enlightenment thinkers applied reason and the scientific method to society and the questions of governance.

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) believed the best government was a strong king, because man was a savage beast at heart.

John Locke (1632-1704) believed all men were endowed with natural rights, and that is was government’s job to protect those rights – life, liberty, and property.

The French philosophes believed in the following ideas:

1) Truth can only be arrived at through reason 1) Truth can only be arrived at through reason. 2) What is natural, is also good and reasonable.

3) Acting in accordance with nature can bring happiness 3) Acting in accordance with nature can bring happiness. 4) By taking a scientific view, society can make progress and people may live better lives.

5) People can gain freedom through Reason.

Voltaire (1694-1778) believed in the concept of tolerance Voltaire (1694-1778) believed in the concept of tolerance. He also criticized (and was jailed for it) the laws and social customs of France.

Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu (1689-1755)

Montesquieu believed that government should not be concentrated in one place. He proposed a system of checks and balances, or a separation of powers. He also advocated a strong rule of Law.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1788) believed in personal equality, as well as social contract theory.

Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794) believed that all trials should be fair, torture should be outlawed and that punishments should fit the crime.

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) believed that women should be equal to men before the law.

Mary Wollstonecraft’s daughter, Mary Shelley, wrote the famous novel Frankenstein.
