Poetry Unit

Bellringer Do you like poetry? Why or Why not?

Poetry: Form – arrangement of the words on the page Lines – may or may not be sentences - lines separated into STANZAS Sound – read out loud with rhyme, rhythm Imagery – 5 senses similes, metaphors, personification Theme – the message - what the poem is about

Poetry *List all the types of poetry you know. *Now get with a partner – discuss your lists and create one list together. *Decide who is going to be the writer – when name is called come to the board and write one type of poetry that is not already on the board.

Topic Poem: Choose one of the following topics: *Summertime *Homework *Favorite Sport (pick one or all sports in general) *Vacation *Boyfriends/Girlfriends

*Now write the first 12 things that come to your mind about your topic. Can be words or phrases. *Friends Fun listeners family weddings sharing tears Sports laughter shoulders childhood caring loneliness *Next – choose at least 8 words/phrases to form a poem about your topic. (next slide)

Friends What are friends? Family and Fun They wipe away my tears, And fill me with laugher. They remind me of childhood dreams, And share my aspirations. They care for me in time of need, And lend a shoulder to lean on. They take away my loneliness, And listen to my stories.

Activity *Write a rough draft of your poem. *Once completed show me for a piece of computer paper. *Final copy MUST BE colorful and neat. *No pencil should be seen!

Expressive Poetry : Read your poem – aloud to each other Decide what the theme is AND what it is about Decide a way to present your poem to the class in a way that the viewers will understand what it is about. Present

Grab it – Picture Poem Take a piece of white paper. Take 3-4 pieces of colored paper. Arrange the colored pieces into a PICTURE. Glue down colored pieces. Write a poem about your PICTURE. *At least 6 lines (words) *Title your poem *Must be colorful and neat.

Acrostic Classwork Now it is your turn! You will be writing each type of acrostic poems. Type one – Create your poem using key Words and phrases… have a separate idea For each line. Type 2- Create your poem in the form of a Sentence… the lines all blend together. Each poem must start with a WORD of 5 or more Letters. It must be colorful and neat.
