1 Poetry Terms – Lit Bk pgs 189-191
1. Poetry is a type of literature in which ideas, images, and feelings are expressed in few words. 2. Form – The way a poem looks on the page is called form. 3. Lines – Poetry – Poetry is a type of literature in which ideas, Words make up sentences which are called lines in poetry. 4. Stanzas – Lines that are arranged in groups are called stanzas. 5. Free Verse – Poetry that is NOT written in strict pattern is called free verse. 6. Line Length – Line length is how long the poem’s lines are and the length to suggests meaning. 7. Punctuation – Punctuation (. , ! ?) in poetry, is used to emphasize the feelings of the poem. 8. Sentence Structure - The way the words are arranged in a poem is called sentence structure. 9. Sound – Sound helps to express meaning and emotions in a poem and it includes rhyme, rhythm and repetition. 10. Rhyme – The repetition of similar sounds at the END of words – ex. Moon and June. 11. Rhythm – The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem. 12. Repetition – The use of sounds, words, phrases or lines more than once. 13. Alliteration – The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of 2 or more words. 14. Imagery – Words and phrases that appeal to a reader’s five senses. 15. Figurative Language – Words and phrases that present ordinary things in new and unusual ways. (You must know the 7 types) 16. Simile – A comparison of 2 things using “LIKE” or “AS.” 17. Metaphor – A comparison of 2 things NOT using like or as. 18. Personification – A kind of figurative language in which an animal, object, or idea is given human qualities. 19. Tone – The poet’s attitude towards the subject. 20. Word Choice - You can identify the tone by attention to images and word choice – how we say what we say. 21. Speaker – The voice of the poem, the person saying the words. 22. Prose – every day writing using sentences (capital letters, punctuation, nouns, verbs…) leading to paragraphs
