2 3. free verse-poems that are written as
the author chooses; they do not follow a specific rhyme scheme or pattern Ex. snapshot poem, event poem. 4. imagery-a mental picture 5. metaphor-comparing two things without using like or as Ex. Paul Bunyan is a mountain of a man.

3 6. onomatopoeia-use of words to represent or
imitate sounds Ex. The boom of the thunder woke me up. 7. poetry-words arranged in such a way as to express ideas and emotions 8. repetition-repeating the same words or phrases in a line or a poem

4 9. rhyme-when two or more words have similar
sounds Ex. I’m not going to school today. I’d rather go outside to play. 10. rhythm-a regular pattern of accented and unaccented syllables Ex. A little old man from Peru, Was sailing a ship with his crew.

using “like” or “as” Ex. Paul Bunyan is as big as a mountain. 12.  stanza-a number of lines that divide a poem into sections

person in a poetic form following a specific pattern 14. cinquain-a five-line poem 15. color poem-describes colors in interesting ways; it can be written in free verse or any familiar rhyming pattern

7 16. couplet-are composed of two-line stanzas
that rhyme 17.five senses poem-a poem in which each line describes a topic as it appeals to one of the senses; it should describe a favorite holiday (done in free verse) 18.haiku-A single thought expressed in three non- rhyming lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables. Haiku very often describe subjects from nature.

8 19. months poem-a series of couplets about the
months of the year; each couplet describes the month or tells something about it 20. quatrain-written in 4 lines following specific rhyming pattern; it may be written as aabb, aaaa, or abcb; abab 21. subject poem-acrostic poem in which the letters of the subject are used to start each line; the subject line is written vertically, and the word or phrase about the subject is written after each letter.
