Grade 9 Course Descriptions English 9A – This course will allow students to read both literary and informational texts, and will give them exposure to intensive hands-on writing instruction with the goal of developing high school level writing skills. Strategic Literature 1A - This class is designed to assist students who have scored in the Far Below Basic range on state and district designed exams. It is also used as a reading and writing intervention for incoming 9th grade students. The three components of the course are: a) independent reading, b) educational software, and c) small group instruction. Its primary functions are to help students improve their overall reading, comprehension, and writing levels. All three skills will enable students to better perform in all academic classes.

Syllabus All students have been given a syllabus which includes course description, grading policy and contract, to be signed by parent/guardian. It is also posted on-line at www. sanpedrohs.org

Classroom Expectations All students are required to uphold LAUSD and SPHS policies of proper dress and behavior. Students have been given a copy of the SPHS Honor Code and Attendance Policy, and will be expected to adhere to these guidelines. In addition, punctuality, preparation, courtesy, and respect will of course be expected, and will affect work habits and cooperation grades.

Attendance Policy & Class Participation Students will be held accountable to the SPHS attendance policy, and will also be expected to arrive on time to class each day. Tardy Policy: Students that are tardy MUST get a tardy slip from the office before entering class. Any absence must be followed by a doctor’s or parent’s note upon return to class.

Materials: Composition booklet Binder with lined paper Pencils, pens, highlighters, colored pencils
