How to put the “Power” in Your PowerPoint Tabitha Long ITRT Russell County Schools

Why use PowerPoint? Organize your thoughts Organize the material Link text, photos, videos, etc. Easy way to supply students with notes IEP Blog, Wiki, Moodle Absences

Classroom Setup Classroom set up is important in the PowerPoint design –Lighting –Student seating –Room size

PowerPoint Basics: Fonts 18 point 20 point 24 point 28 point 36 point 40 point

PowerPoint Basics: Fonts AVOID USING ALL CAPITAL LETTERS BECAUSE IT’S MUCH HARDER TO READ AND OFTEN CONSIDER ‘YELLING’

PowerPoint Basics: Color Dark letters against a light background work. Dark letters against a light background are best for smaller rooms and for teaching.

PowerPoint Basics: Color Many experts feel that a dark blue or black background works best for talks in a large room. Light letters against a dark background also work.

PowerPoint Basics: Color Avoid red-green combinations because a large fraction of the human population is red-green colorblind. Lots of people can’t read this – and even if they could, it makes your eyes hurt. If you want to try something different – be sure to see what it looks like with the projector BEFORE you actually use it.

Choose colors for background and font carefully Good Bad Good So, So Bad Worst BAD Good Bad Good So, So Bad Worst Good Bad Good Bad Worst

PowerPoint Basics: Color Different slide designs can be used. You can obtain these from: PowerPoint program Design Ribbon in PowerPoint 2007 Theme Section Internet nt_templates.htm nt_templates.htm Click Download, then Save, then click Open to open the template in PowerPoint

PowerPoint Basics: Layout Keep layout and style as consistent as possible. 6x6 Presentation Rule: No more than six words per line No more than six bullets per slide Use Different Slide Layouts Located on Home ribbon Slide section

PowerPoint Basics: Layout The reason for limiting text blocks to a few lines is that when the text block goes on and on forever, students have to make a huge effort to read the text, which will keep them from paying attention to what you are saying. Every time you lose their focus, learning suffers!

PowerPoint Basics: Layout It is often effective to “unveil” a list point by point. How To: Highlight text you want to “unveil” Click on Animations ribbon Custom Animations Add Effect Entrance

PowerPoint Basics: Layout Do not overuse animations Do NOT use screeching sounds as text enters!

Do not cram too much into a slide.

Emk1 knockdown inhibits lumen formation in MDCK cells: -RT-PCR: EMK1 is effectively knocked down in MDCK cells 24 hours after transfection with P- SUPER (control) or P-SUPER-siEMK1 plasmid; knockdown confirmed on the right with antibodies to EMK1. - Collagen overlay assay: cells cultured 24 h on collagen I before being overlaid with additional collagen on the apical surface, analyzed 24 h later. Note the lack of lumen in EMK1-KO cultures. - Ca switch: control or EMK1-KO cells were plated in low Ca medium 24 h upon transfection with pSUPER or pSUPER-KO. After 12 h, cultures were switched to normal medium for 24 h. Transmission EM of cells sectioned perpendicular to the substratum shows lack of microvilli in EMK1-KO cells.

Remember PowerPoint is teaching “tool” Slides are to assist with teaching Not replacement for you.

Let’s Take a Break

Puzzled About Interdependence? Oh, New York, can I have some of your green apples to give to my teacher? Sure, I’ll trade you some oranges for your apples. Then we both get what we need. Yes, Florida…As long as I can have some of your orange juice for my stuffy nose. It’s too COLD for them to grow here! For interdependence, each party depends on the other for something it needs but cannot make itself. They fit together like a puzzle: neither can be whole without the other piece.
